hi im thinking of doing a coast to coast trip from say cairns to perth along the coast. I was thinking of doing it by car with a few friends is this possible? also are we allowed to say set up camp on the way instead of going into hostels? is this advisable? thanks for your help

Australia is a wonderful country for camping. Campsites are available almost everywhere, mostly privately operated, but with great facilities and not expensive. We covered the Melbourne - Perth stretch in January '07, but were forced into motels when a major storm hit the Esperance area. You may find campsites full along the Great Ocean Road during the school holidays but if you go inland a few miles there should be no problem.
It has been a few years since we were up Cairns way but there was no problem with availability there or anywhere inland from the coast. We avoid the beaches normally so cannot advise on the availability of campsites there.
