hmmm, ok, im scared....

im planning on going to work overseas for about a year..

IS IT NORMAL TO BE SO SCARED??

travelling and learning is such a wonderful thing, but why be scared? has anyone else experienced working overseas and feeling unsure while planning it? does the good experiences outweigh the bad? is it just cos ure leaving your comfort zone?

anyway, id love to hear about your stories Smile

The best things in life are always the scariest. Afterwards, you always wonder why you were so scared to begin with. Smile

Everybody feels the same, i worked in Cyprus for 2 summer seasons. Although the second seasono was easier, I felt a lot of nerves when i first started. But as with any travelling, as long as you have a good personality, and can make friends easily, you shouldnt have a problem. Where are you thinking of going?

yes nugget, I too am a bit scared of walking away from the comfort of a stable environment and job to hit the open road. To alleviate the anxiety, I just tell myself that if it all goes to shit and the trip sucks, then I can hop on a plane and go home.

so, no worries either way

My wife and I are both quitting our Jobs and taking off in jan 2004. Between us we earn quite a bit, have a very comfortable life, so to give up all that and travel is scary but I dont think we would do it if it wasn't scary.

hmm, thanks guys, makes sense...

MATTY, im hoping to go to ireland and work for at least 6 months...but the main idea is to go travelling atound europe as much as I can, and I might be by myself when doing so, thats another freaky thing! im really good at making freinds though(i talk quite a bit! Roll Eyes) and i dont think ill have a problem with making friends

LOSTWORLD, WOW, thats a big step...but there will always be jobs when you come back, living life is a much better option (as opposed to a 9-5 job day in day out)

I feel better now knowing that its normal to feel so scared

Those quotes some of you have added is so true...and if you back out, just means your a coward

Scared or excited?

I like to think I'm really excited every time I jump into the unknown [have moved every couple of years my whole life--my CV looks like crap!], but like you, I also say I'm scared when I take the big leap. During every move, I always say: what am I doing? Why am I selling everything I own? Why am I not happy staying home? Why must I uproot myself & go to some god forsaken place I've never been to before?

Actually I think it's just other voices in my head: what are you doing? why are you giving up a good job? what about your future/security/responsibilities, etc.? Once I've made the leap, I never look back and have never regretted a single move.

Try not to let the fears of other people influence what you are really feeling. I know you are excited about your next move. We're behind you!

Thanks Kimbo! they are encouraging words Smile ...but compared to you, im only going away for a year...wow, youve picked up and actually sold all your belongings and moved to a totally different place...that would be a huge step to take and I would go crazy thinking about how everyone else would feel about my decision, i think thats my problem, I think about others before myself..should stop doing that or else im not going to get anything done!

So, you dont regret any of the moves you have done in the past...i guess doing that also gives you a lot of confidence in yourself and the decisions you make in life

Thanks again
