Small town in the German Alps! Its called Garmisch - Partenkirchen. Its actually two towns that became one. Less than two hours away from Munchen. Its a great place to ski and you can get to the Tsugschpitze (I hope I got that right) the highest point of the german alps. The Hot wine and the Christmas Fair is fabulous. And beer is the best!

I'm planning a year long trip at the moment and compiled them all for my own benefit so I figured I might as well post them up. Thanks for the welcome though, this board has been super helpful to me so far.

My contribution:

Guanajuato, Mexico - overall beautiful and laid back town. Great place to take a language class.

For various reasons, my favourite cities include:

Toronto
Brooklyn (you can keep Manhattan)
London
St. Petersburg
Stockholm
Lijiang
Copenhagen
Seattle
Tashkent
Samara
Jinghong
Halifax

Non-cities with a place in my heart include Pasvalys (Lithuania), Laxey (Isle of Man), Nelson (BC), the island of Jurmo (Åland), Xiahe (China) and Tad Lo (Laos)

and despite not spending anywhere near enough time in either place, I felt Philadelphia and Chongqing both had a lot of potential as places I'd love.

Its very helpful to have the list compiled as one. I would like to make one slight correction. As far as I can tell; I googled and have never personally heard of Karin, AK. I think you got Karin in Ak's signature as part of your list. Please let me know if I'm wrong here. I wonder if she knows she has an imaginary Alaskan village named after her? It'd be pretty cool I think. Smile
Here's my stab at the revamped list:

There have benn lots of great recommendations on this thread - some of my favorites are:
Budapest - really awesome sight at night on the river, really nice atmosphere.
Szeged, Hungary - on the southern border in the eastern part near Serbia. My daughter just spent a year there as a foreign exchange student - we went to visit her - was great.

Brasov, Romania would be a very smart choice.

Because it offers history along with today high standard tourism at much lower cost than any part of Western Europe.

Brasov is an old medieval town down the Carpathian Mountains of 300.000 habitants. There are plenty of attractions: castles, wild surroundings, hiking trails, and a tourism oriented infrastructure all around. Not to speak about festivals and workshops, plus 365 days when to visit it.

Go meeting Brasov at http://www.romaniatourism.com

Marian

Writer Josh- Whoops! heh, as you may have seen in another thread, I am ashamedly bad with geography. I attampted to figure your recommaendations out with the help of google but evidently made a few errors. (excuse: I was at work and not fully dedicated to my lesson) I apologize and will work harder next time Smile I did however find a Samara, Costa Rica and thought that was what you had meant.

No there is no Karin, Alaska (yet!). But you can probably put down the whole state for must-see before dying. The only places that you can miss are our truck stops that have no character. Like Tok and Glenallen. Just gas up, eat and leave. Or Eat, Shoots and Leaves.

After visiting Seoul with its traffic-clogged streets, Gyeongju, a city of 350,000, just four hours southeast of the Korean capital was a pleasant relief. You can travel here easily by train from Seoul.

More than one-third of the city is a national park, so the old-style buildings are preserved. It’s called “a museum without walls” because it has so many historical buildings, temples and UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Our favourite sight is the royal tomb of Korea’s King Tut. You can go into the burial mound and see the ornaments, weapons and treasures discovered here when the grave was opened in 1974.

The city also has good restaurants and a sacred mountain, Mt. Namsan, where you can hike along trails to see a giant art gallery of ancient statues and rock carvings.

You can see photos and learn more about it here: http://www.krolltravel.com/stories/Korea_Gyeongju.htm

Can we add Dakar (Senegal) please? I loved it there.

And is it possible to consider editing or at least adding a comment on some? because Palma de Mallorca (or anywhere in Mallorca) and Istanbul can only count as "not so visited" if you mean "not so visited by Americans". There are tons and tons of tourists there from different countries in western Europe.

Great list. Theere are alot of cities I love hear, and alot I plan to go to. The one I have to give a another recomentation for is Cadiz, Spain. The two times I've been there, I was planning on staying two days, and then moving on, but I was not able to leave, and stayed a week both times, and left only because I was running low on time. Aslo in spain, Granada is wonderful. I spent two weeks there, and the city is amazing. Also Leipzig and Dresden in Germany are great. In leipsig, the locals were shocked to see tourists and didn;t believe that we were not there on business. going on cinque terra in italy was a majical place. they don't allow cars in the old cities. Moving around the world Wellington, New Zealand is great. and it seams like most people only stop for a day or two to catch the ferry south, but once you spend a little more time there, you come to realize the great atmosphere. that's all for now, keep up the good work.

Some of the cities on the "not so visited" list are a bit confusing. I mean: Paris, France? I don't know a lot of people who haven't been to Paris.

I'd add to the list:
Westport, Ireland
Leeds, England
Jativa, Spain
Olomouc, Czech Republic
Sibenik, Croatia
Chania, Crete
