Now is the time for insane crowds of people "baibai"-ing at temples, mass migrations to hometowns or vacations overseas (making travel near impossible due to jam-packed highways and flight bookings), most stores and businesses being closed for days, visiting relatives, and people shooting off bottle rockets and firecrackers willy nilly in the streets. If you're lucky, your boss may give you a bonus. If you're young, your relatives give you red envelopes filled with money. And there's a lot of feasting, drinking and smoking, followed by all-night mah-jong sessions and/or karaoke.

CNY is a time for families to get together. The real fun activities don't start for another 2 weeks - the Lantern Festival! That's when you see the lion dances, parades, fireworks, etc.

Leave it to the Honolulu Advertiser to have come out on top of the search for jai, aka Monk's food... not sure if this is more local (Hawaii) or authentic, but it is very popular in HI this time of years, andtotally floats my boat b/c unlike 99.9% of chinese dishes served up here, it is 100% vegetarian whoo hoo

I love the Chinese New Year parade...so colorful! And I know a kick ass noodle shop thats dirt cheap and so friendly. (I was by myself last year so they sat people at the table with me...good fun!)

Last year...I'll never forget. It was all of 4 degrees out. Standing out there for 3 minutes and I couldn't feel my hands, even with really warm gloves. 2 hours later I thought I'd never get circulation back.
