Began Gap Year Trip Six Years Ago

Yes, this is the thread for long term travellers that feel home calling. I've felt it calling for a while. The symptons are different for everyone, but mine are

Reading in a hostel rather than walking around
Going to shopping malls to poke around(The food courts are great in Portugal, and cheaper than the street! That IS a fact)

Not really being interested in yet another church, though I'll go in one if it passed me by.

When I find out a taxi only costs 8 euros, I jump on it. I've hauled this junk around too long already to save a few euros.

Getting the sinking feeling, even as the clock counts down, that when I get home, I'm going to want to buy a ticket to South or Central America!

I spent a full 2 weeks in Thailand doing nothing but watching movies, playing in those play station arcades, wandering malls and eating at Sizzler. If I didn't feel like going out I'd buy bootleg movies and watch them in an internet cafe for hours.

I know the feeling of not wanting to do anything travel related while traveling.

And, I also know the feeling of wanting to immediately travel the moment I get home.

This is very familiar, as I type this, I swear that I have typed this before, so there is another thread around here like this...But who cares? (Oh, anniebanannie)

I have felt like that before at the end of a trip. I spent two and a half months in Eastern Europe a few years ago. I was depressed by Sarajevo, put off by the malaise of the people in Croatia and stultified by Bratislava. I had planned to see more of Eastern Europe but binned my plans after a month and a half and went to Western Europe instead. I was sort of pissed off with myself as the days neared the fly-home date. So I went to Frankfurt and had three days left. I had no interest in seeing Frankfurt really (look at my Flickr site, and you will see pics of that period. A lot of the roof of the Hotel, which I had found through an accidentally unlocked door. That's where I sat, high above the street, just looking out at other rooftops and feeling grouchy). I knew that I was about to go home and I had the same feeling about another church-another park-another road friend-another pub-blahdeblah. The only time I ever really felt like "Okay, let's just get this over with."

So I get it.

But ten minutes off the plan and I regretted blowing those days. And, like you, I immediately yearned for CA. Where I left my heart. I think it's on the beach in La Ceiba. You see it let me know.

Buck Up Little Soldier. We're here for you.

Yes, this has been done, very recently, by Dharker. And someone else very recently before that. But, apparently search isn't working or something.

Tortuga...hop on one of those tourist buses and ride it around awhile. I did that in Lisbon and it was kind of relaxing. And it was fun to listen in on other conversations.
