My boyfriend of 500 years (or so it feels like) and I are going through a really rough patch, and this may be the end. While I am consumed with sadness, I really don't want to spend Christmas alone (plus my job is shut down completely from Xmas Eve through after New Year's) and I'm trying to figure out where I can go last-minute -- ALONE -- to help cure my heartache. Where are good places to be on Christmas where I won't be overcome with sorrow and sadness.

Things I like:
running
dancing
meeting new people
art
music
nature
hiking
beaches

I want to go to someplace in Central America or South America -- I've been to Brazil and Costa Rica, and would like to try someplace new. I'd like to use my Spanish. I would like to go for 3 weeks (I'd go for more, but with my coworker on mat leave, I don't think I'll get any more time.) Can someone help me figure out where I can go where I won't be sad? Can I tango my tears away in Argentina? Surf in Panama? Hike in Chile?

If I get back together with my boyfriend, I'll still go away.

Sorry 'bout your relationship problems. On the other hand, you look fantastic for being at least 501 years old. Kudos.

Wink

It's a tough list you've got there - at least for the places I know in South America.

Peru:
dancing, meeting new people, art, nature are a go
beaches...not so much

Chile:
Probably has it all...maybe a bit tamer on the party side.

Paraguay:
art? nature? hiking? beaches? Nah. However, you can hike the crap out of the Chaco. Wink If you feel like it anyhow.

Bolivia:
art, nature, hiking most definitely
found it a bit harder to meet locals - plenty of tourist though

Argentina:
Love it or hate it. I loved BsAs. My gf hates it - too macho apparently. I didn't get any of that. Wink

Venezuela:
Beaches.. I like Puerto Columbo, there must be others
Hiking.. more than you can hike in three weeks
Art.. Ok, got me there.
Nature: In total abundance.
Mt. Roraima
la Gran Sabana
Tropical forests
masive tropical rivers
Sierra Nevada
Angel falls.(well worth the trip alone)

Three weeks is a good short time frame for venezuela. The people you'll meet will be more unusual and probably worth knowing, since the country is a bit off the backpacker path.

the corn islands! everyone's really friendly on little corn, and when you want a town with a little bit more, go to big corn. not exactly a thriving nightlife place though, and not big on art (but i'm sure you can find that in mainland nicaragua). i stayed at derek's place on ltitle corn and LOVED it. i was feeling a little depressed beforehand but just staying there for a couple days made everything better.

Or you could come out here to Perth, cheie. My girlfriend would probably be glad to have a fellow urbanite around for once - not just farmers like the rest of us. Wink

Thanks all for advice. I actually had a friend try to convince me to go to Australia, and I found these amazing fares -- $700 -- until I realized it was Sydney, Canada. Hah! Anyway, can't afford 3k for plane tickets to Australia, so I am going to go either to:

Ecuador
Argentina
or Chile

I have to figure which will be the best place that I can truly explore in 3 weeks, feel safe alone, and not cry on Xmas. Thanks all!
