Either way you do it, once you get to Oz you'll want to dive on Great Barrier Reef it really is the best dive site in the world, so you might aswell combine both at the same time and save a wee bit of money. Its not too expensive to learn there as there is lots of competition so the price stays quite low. Have fun.

Just do it on the reef. I'm pretty sure there's one company in Cairns that pays you to get certified through them. Or I think you work for them and they certify you for free.

do the course in bundaberg, OZ East coast. It has the cheapest prices I've ever seen and the dive centre seemed to be very well eqipped / new / reliable. Believe it or not: it was only 150,- A$ for the open water diver.

Go to WWW.PADI.com this is going to give you the best idea of cost and requirements for you to complete a dive course.
Be aware that in Aussie and New Zealand there is also another certified diving instruction industry that will certifiy you as an opern water diver.
This is called: SSI It must be noted that if you do a dive course in Aussie under this organization then you will not be able to return to Canada and be a reconized open water diver. In short go PADI.

ps That wasn't a plug for PADI they are just more well known throughout the world. And I know as a fact that once you have experianced Aussies underwater world your gona what to compare it with your own.
