So I'm planning on starting my long-term (permanent?) journey in the beginning of the year. I haven't yet decided where I'm going to start, probably depends on exactly when I'm going to leave. It'll either be somewhere in Latin America or Asia.

For the first month or two I want to find a place where I can just relax and chill and get healthy again. Preferably somewhere I can rent a room or an apartment, close to the ocean/sea where I can go walking on the beach and swimming and close to good walking trails and cool stuff to explore.

I don't want somewhere touristy or a big city but I have several businesses/websites that are going to fund my travels so I'll need to be able to get access to the internet on a regular basis (I'll have a laptop).

Somewhere with friendly people and a good market where I can buy fresh food to cook. Rustic is good, I don't need luxury, just a clean place to sleep.

So, to the experts: Any suggestions? Any off-the-beaten-path cool villages you want to share? Know anyone who might have a room to rent? I'm open to just about any thing and any where really as long as it's relatively inexpensive.

If you want to stay a bit away from the biggest chunk of tourism and start in Asia - I'd say the Philippines. Something like: Romblon Island, Siquijor Island, Bacacay on Masbate Island. All three have decent infrastructure (i.e. you'll be able to go to an internet place) and all offer remot(ish) places to stay right on the beach.

Here some inspiration.

Bacacay, Masbate Island

Romblon Island

Siquijor Island

Thanks for the response. I've actually decided to start in Central America. I found some volunteer programs I'm interested in and I have friends from Nicaragua that I think that hook me up with a cheap place to stay. Then I'll make my way south from there.

I would suggest Galle or Hikkadwa, Sri Lanka. Incredibly low cost of living unbearably hot from April to October. Great surfing, great hiking, spiritually invigorating. I can refer you to a couple of families I know in Ambulangoda.
