Conception Day

A Russian region best known as the birthplace of Vladimir Lenin has found a novel way to fight the nation's birthrate crisis: It has declared Sept. 12 the Day of Conception and for the third year running is giving couples time off from work to procreate.

The hope is for a brood of babies exactly nine months later on Russia's national day. Couples who ``give birth to a patriot'' during the June 12 festivities win money, cars, refrigerators and other prizes.

Ulyanovsk, a region on the Volga River about 550 miles east of Moscow, has held similar contests since 2005. Since then, the number of competitors, and the number of babies born to them, has been on the rise.

Alexei Bezrukov and his wife, Yulia, won a 250,000 ruble prize - equivalent to $10,000 - in June after she gave birth to a baby boy, Andrei. Bezrukov said patriotism wasn't their motive for having a child, their third, although the money was welcome.

White Night in Rome

quote:
In Rome, a Reason to Stay Up All Night

The idea of staying out all night long in Rome is a captivating idea, especially if you know you won't be alone. Rest assured that if you decide to paint the town from dusk to dawn on Saturday, September 8, you'll be doing it with millions of others.

That's because September 8 in Rome is the celebration of the fifth annual "White Night," when museums, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, and other cultural organizations all over the city stay open till dawn. Night owls who partake of this year's event can expect concerts, plays, dance performances, fireworks, magic shows, readings, installations, and plenty of other activities in the Eternal City.

More than a dozen important museums and cultural institutions will roll out the welcome mat on the 8th, including the Borghese Gallery, the Palazzo Senatorio, the Villa Medici, and the Palazzo Farnese, among others. Additionally, some two dozen art galleries will remain open along with some of the city's best film venues.

"White Night," or "Notte Bianca" as locals know it, is free for all, though you should expect to pay if you dine in a restaurant, cafe, or wine bar. Public transportation is free after 10 p.m.

"White Night" has become a popular annual event throughout Europe, and similar nocturnal adventures have been planned for Paris, Riga, Madrid, and Brussels. For more information, see La Notte Bianca.

The Icelandic Phallological Museum is probably the only museum in the world to contain a collection of phallic specimens belonging to all the various types of mammal found in a single country.

Phallology is an ancient science which, until recent years, has received very little attention in Iceland, except as a borderline field of study in other academic disciplines such as history, art, psychology, literature and other artistic fields like music and ballet. .

Now, thanks to The Icelandic Phallological Museum, it is finally possible for individuals to undertake serious study into the field of phallology in an organized, scientific fashion. .

The Icelandic Phallological Museum contains a collection of over one hundred and fifty penises and penile parts belonging to almost all the land and sea mammals that can be found in Iceland.

Amazing Upside Down House

The Upside Down House is a project created by a Polish businessman and philanthropist named Daniel Czapiewski, and is located in Poland in the tiny village of Szymbark. Rather than simply being a bizarre tourist attraction, that managed to attract thousands of tourists, the house is also meant to be a profound statement about the Communist era and the state of the world. Czapiewski’s company would normally take three weeks to construct a house, but this one took 114 days because the workers were disorientated by the strange angles of the walls. Many tourists who visit complain of mild seasickness and dizziness after just a few minutes of being in the structure.
