Don't worry about going it alone mate, that's the best way to travel. You'll meet plenty of great people along the way to do all that stuff with. Frankly, what hit me was, you're off for a 4-month adventure with plenty of woman to meet and you're looking to tie down to one before you even leave ?!?
Some advice, though I'm probably biased, schedule the most time for New Zealand, especially are looking for the adventure type stuff. I know it's a lot smaller but there is SOOO much more to see and do. And if you go in Summer, be sure to book now for the permits and what not or you won't get on a lot of the trails.
Have Fun!

I've spent time in both and I have to agree for the most part that NZ is probably better for some adventure activities, hiking, rivers, etc. However, if it's diving, beaches and drinking that you want, it's hard to beat Australia. I'd say two months in each would be a good introduction.
