Does anyone know of any agencies or organizations that are accepting volunteers? I have been looking and everything I have seen is seeking specific skills, like teachers, engineers and medical staff, which I am not.

I do a lot of home and furniture restoration, and I am currently building a boat. I keep thinking that I could be very helpful over there, but have no idea how. Is it best to just leave this to the locals?

fyi.. yesterday on mtv diary, one of the hosts on mtv went over to thailand and india. apparently the city in thailand that they covered, had almost all the people working with the aftermath of the tsunami as volunteers. they also talked a lot about how many people are helping in india, just playing with the kids and trying to cheer them up.

Can I just toss in something??

As of yesterday, not even half of the money pledged to the UN by the nations of the world to help with the Tsunami relief has shown up.

The UN is pleading with the nations that announced contributions to please honour their pledge because they are now moving into the longterm phase of the reconstruction in some areas.

Call your local politicans and ask them if your country has contributed their full amount!

A U.S.-based organization that is placing volunteers through a local organization in Thailand is Volunteers For Peace. I am going there, well, tomorrow actually and plan on spending a week or more in South Thailand. You can commit for as many weeks as you like, with a week minimum. There is a flat $200 fee, with most of it going straight to relief effort, and I believe you pay $70 US per week to pay for your costs and homestay, if I remember correctly. Anyways you can read more about it at their website: www.vfp.org.

My friend and I raised close to US $5,000 by throwing a neighborhood party. We sent flyers out asking our neighbores to help our world neighbors. we asked everybody to bring either an appetizer or a beveraaaage and a donation for Save The Children. The response was overwhelming. Everybody felt like they had contributed and had a good time.

I just thought I would share in case anybody was looking for easy ways to raise money.

Sory about typo. The neighbors were really delightful, they were not neighbores. Also, we did have many beverages, not beveraaages. Although, some may have felt they were the latter.

Hello!
if anyone is interested in volunteer work in india you can contact amritapuri.org in kerala. this is the home of ammachi, the hugging saint. she is doing wonders for tsunami relief and volunteers are definatly needed. she will be rebuilding homes and villages until all that were damaged by the tsunami are replaced, so if youre into building its a good place to look. you dont have to pay to volunteer with amma and you get darshan (hugs&blessings) whenever you want! the website also has tons of photos and video footage if you havent seen enough. anyway, some of it is simply and beautifully amma being compassionate with the villagers...a different perspective than your average media coverage. also needed are people to serve food and work in the hospital. there are plenty of other opportunities too.
peace and blessings-
s
