Holds PhD in Packing |
Ok, so I´m here in Brasil with the love of my life. Long story short, we want to get out of here, take off to some country and work for at least a year. My question is, where?
There´s lots of factors to think of, most importantly visa eligibilty. He holds a Brasilian passport and I´ve got an Australian one, so we need somewhere where we can both get the same deal, as far as working visas go. Now, we´re not too fussy on where exactly to go, but here are some of our favoured suggestions so far: Germany, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Canada, UK, Romania/elsewhere in Eastern Europe. Here are some details: we´re both at uni, both 19, he speaks: fluent English, Portuguese and Spanish, I speak fluent English (duh) and less fluent Port and Spanish, we have about $US5000 but can get more if need be, ummm, can´t think of anything else. Going somewhere where we don´t speak the lanugage would only be of concern with regard to finding jobs. Neither of us have ever been to any of these places and we´re seeking your expertise. Where should we go? Where can we get working visas? Finding our the technicalities is easy but I want insight from those of you who have first-hand knowledge. Where is good to live? Your experiences? All thoughts and advice very much appreciated. |

Knows What a Schengen Visa Is |
I'm definately NOT an expert, and rarely know what I'm talking about, but my roommate is about to come back from his year of teaching English in Taiwan. He did a lot of research beforehand and he found out it was one of the few places he could actually make money instead of just getting by...He knew no Chinese beforehend.
For the record, I would be ok with just getting by for the experience. |

Well it comes down to the fundamental question of, 'where do you most want to go'? If you can't settle on a particular country then pick a region that has a bunch of regions your interested in... from reading your message it looks like Europe is high on your list.
Realize that Europe is likely still one of the toughest countries for foreigners to get 'legal' work. There are always opportunities to find under the table jobs but no visa, not as much money and you may not be widely loved as you are taking jobs from locals. You both sound like you are skilled enough to teach English. One wild card factor is accent - if either of you has a heavy accent then that will hurt your chances. Teaching English in Asia is the... easiest way to get a job and a visa. I suggest you browse through the past postings from other folks on this site, go to the library and read about countries, visit Dave's ESL Cafe, and perhaps most importantly visit hostels in Brazil and talk to travelers. If you settle on Europe then I suggest you go to Eastern Europe. Best of luck and happy trails "I tell you: one must still have chaos in one to give birth to a dancing star." Nietzsche |

Where's my Cabana boy? |
I would suggest asia. It is the easiest place for both of you to get a visa, you can live fairly cheaply (depending on where in asia of course) and let's say you teach kids in China how to speak english...well when you feel like you're getting restless just jet down to Thailand or Cambodia for a few days and check out the scene there.
It does sound like your partial to Europe though. Good luck. I know it's pretty hard unless you're an EU citizen to work there. Maybe you could try working for the organized crime ring that is woman's fur in Italy and Russia. I heard something about that on PBS the other day. Seems lucrative. ___________________________ 'The time has come,' the Walrus said, 'To talk of many things: Of shoes -- and ships -- and sealing wax -- Of cabbages -- and kings -- And why the sea is boiling hot -- And whether pigs have wings |

Like everyone else said, Asia's the place to go. You can also get jobs in Eastern Europe, although the standard of living in some countries is tough and the language barrier could be a problem. You could also try teaching Egypt, they're in need of English teachers too.
