*Because Asia is way bigger geographically than all the rest I split it into 2 parts (like the Bootsnall forums have done).

Question:
What is your favourite continent for travel?

Choices:
North America
South America
Africa
Europe
Asia - Middle East (inc Turkey)
Asia - the rest of Asia
Australasia
Antarctica

It was close between Africa and rest of Asia. Travel wise Asia was much easier and I probably enjoyed myself in the moment more often in Asia but travel in Africa is something really different and is hard to explain. I noticed I got more out of the experiences after I left than I did even while I was there.

It's Africa. No other continent is even close...

although I would have to say the Indian subcontinent is probably my favorite region. India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives....hard to beat that.

I haven't done much of Africa yet, though I like the bits I've seen.

Europe seems very popular with the good folk on this travel forum. Smile

I voted for South America.

North America: Spent almost all my life here (I've lived in both the US and Canada). I absolutely adore this continent and I have awesome memories of camping trips, road trips, etc. North America, though, lacks the "exotic" factor in a lot of ways, so it doesn't make number one on my list.

Africa: I have limited experience in Africa, having been to only Morocco and Senegal (and Egypt, but for the purposes of this poll that's in the Middle East category). I loved almost every second of my time in Africa- it's so different from anything I'm used to that it's always a fascinating experience from beginning to end. Fascinating but frustrating! I'm nineteen and just starting to venture out into the world of solo travel, so I'm keeping Africa (the ultimate very-rewarding-but-very-difficult continent) out of the number one spot for now.

Europe: I lived in Sweden for a year as an exchange student in high school and I've been around a bit of western Europe, but I think I'd actually say Europe is last on my list. I can't put my finger on why; it just doesn't capture my interest like the other continents do.

Asia- Middle East: I had my first taste of the Middle East when I went to Egypt for a few weeks back in August. I've been really interested in this part of the world for as long as I can remember, but I don't think I have enough experience there to justify calling it my "favorite travel continent."

Asia- the rest: Some parts of Asia really fascinate me- India, Nepal, Mongolia... but most of it, particularly south-east Asia, for whatever reason, just doesn't hold any real attraction for me.

Australasia: I've only been once, on a brief trip to Australia. I loved it, but like the Middle East, I don't think I have enough of a feel for it yet.

...which brings us to:

South America: I went to Ecuador and Peru in 2006 and it was, without question, the best travel experience I've ever had. I loved everything about both countries- beautiful countries with incredibly friendly people, amazing history, relatively easy to get around, so much to do... not to mention I can get by on my six years of high school Spanish, which I think really helped me get a much better sense of the "spirit" of the places, if you know what I mean. I'm planning on going back to South America (to Argentina, probably Bolivia, and possibly Paraguay) this May for my first-ever solo trip and I definitely couldn't be more excited.

I'm going with South America. I've lived and traveled in Europe and Asia, touched the north of Africa, and not even been to India, so I can't speak from experience. At the same time, I'm an American who has rejected my birthright in the Levant, I speak Spanish and Portuguese and English, and I get along in the Americas. I love the New World for what it's worth, and for what it doesn't have the the Old World does. I can be a different person in Mexico and Brazil and Argentina and the United States. If you ever want to read a tale of the New World, read Macunaima, a tale of a Brazilian folk hero. He is the hero of the New World.
