RTW Preparation Guru![]() |
Hi,
My Girlfriend and I are leaving on a rtw on July the 9th and after much research this is what I've decided to bring - remembering that I will carry anything that we both need (e.g. the medical kit/lonely planet etc.). However, as you all know what you bring depends on where you go so here's the plan (though I'm sure it will change on the road). The Plan Starting on July 9th we fly to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil - we then travel through Brazil, Bolivia, Peru & Chile - flying out of Santiago on the 23rd October into Auckland New Zealand for 1 month followed by Tasmania for 1 week and then Australia for 1 month. We then fly into Singapore for three nights followed by a flight to Bangkok and a 6 month stay in Asia. We plan to travel around S.E. Asia - Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia for about 2 months then travel around India and Nepal for about 2 months followed by China & Tibet for about 2 months finishing up by flying from Hong Kong back to London 12 months later. All of these dates are only indicative and we can stay for a longer/shorter period of time in any region if we decide when we are there. It should be the trip of a life time and we are both really looking forward to it. The Kit List: Clothes Hat/ Bandanna Sunglasses Top Micro Fleece (Inner Shell) Outer (top) Fleece Long johns Running Shorts (for shorts + swimming) 2 X DC Essentials 2 X quick-drying socks Pants X 3 Teva Sandals Hiking Shoes (Merrel) Coat (water proof/ wind breaker) Quick drying T-Shirts X 2 Quick drying Shirt X 2 Hygiene & Health Travel Deodorant Shaving Oil Razor + blades Glycerine soap Toothpaste Toothbrush Sudo Cream Neet Deet Iodine Medical Kit Travel Towel Sun Protection Sun Block lip-gloss Sunscreen Sleeping Sleeping Bag Liner Mosquito Net Bits and pieces Mini sewing kit (+large needle & thick thread) Spoon Maglite Swiss Army penknife Swimming Goggles Gaffa tape Clothes Line Cigarette lighter An all-weather notebook World radio/ MP3 Player (luxury) Digital Camera (undecided as to which type – all advice welcome) Batteries for the camera (+ some kind + charger) Little plastic bags Lunch box Playing Cards 1 X Phrase Book 1 X lonely planet Rucksac Let me know what you think of the list. What am I missing/what should I leave behind and why? Thanks Colm [This message was edited by PLANNING RTWT on 15 April 2004 at 2:12.] [This message was edited by PLANNING RTWT on 15 April 2004 at 2:13.] |

you might find it worth taking some padlocks, some places out there have security which is seemingly non existant.
A money belt is also worth considering me old cherry pie. as far as medical you might want to take a whole lot of imodium because iam afraid that a spell of the brad pitts is inevitable at some stage. big smile |

Don't forget to check electrical outlets to make sure that they will accept the plug on your charger. If they're different, you may need an outlet adapter.
Also... digital camera? I like the Olympus Digital Stylus. Olympus has excellent lenses, and it's a weatherproof camera. You can hold it under running water (ie the rain) and it won't get damaged as long as you have the battery and memory card doors closed. I've also found Canon's to be the easiest to use, in terms of the learning curve. Photo quality is also excellent. Imodium®
For many travelers, packing Imodium® is as second nature as packing a toothbrush. They rely on Imodium® products to prevent a long-planned trip from being ruined by a bout with Traveler's Diarrhea or an unexpected intestinal flu. _____________________________ ServeYourWorld.com -How to Volunteer Abroad Eurailblog.com -4 Months in Europe, Starts Mid-May |

Immodium is great......
great for prolonging the pain. There was also a time when it was great for getting one arrested at Narita as a suspected mule. Philip www.philipblazdell.com |

I have a question about medications. I'll be in a malaria area of africa for over 2 years. How would i go about retaining enough malaria pills for the entire time? can I get them overseas or should i start hoarding them now? hope that made sense. Thanks.

Where do you find a money belt? Are you all talking about a fanny pack?

Yes it is a fanny pack of sorts. Think of it as a stealth fanny pack. Camouflaged a tan or “skin” color. Its primary function is to hold important documents, cash and credit cards. It is worn under your clothing so as to go undetected.

I know this isn't exactly a survival essential, but I don't travel anywhere without a sweetener dispenser. I picked one up when I was in the UK and I love it. I prefer artificial sweetener to sugar in my tea or coffee, and most places I went to in Europe didn't have anything other than sugar, so the dispenser was great. The size of a credit card and it has about 300 tablets in it. Way easier than carrying around 300 packets of Splenda, that's for sure. I have to say though, when I came back to the U.S. and used it people gave me weird looks like I was putting ecstasy tablets in my coffee or something.

Not sure about this website, they recommended I get typhoid and typhus vaccines - my destination is Spain! sounds either sloppy or paranoid to me. But I would add: a headlight (good for dorms as well as setting up a tent after dark) a universal plug for sinks travel clothes pins some kind of twine or nylon thread |

You had a spoon, which is a geat thing to have, but if you are going to be spending time in SE Asia and eating and food stalls I would also recommend bringing plastic chopsticks to carry with you.
