Hi
I will be flying to Japan from Australia, and then will be backpacking my way till India, and then catch another plane from there to Europe. I can stay in most countries of Asia visa-free but i should provide a return ticket. Are they very strict on that at the border?
Thanks
Lucie

Which border(s) are you asking about? It varies greatly depending on the country.

For the trip from Japan to South Korea, you might want to take the overnight ferry from Hiroshima.

I don't know if you can even cross the border into North Korea except for a building on the DMZ. Does anyone out there know about this for sure?

As a French citizen, your country has no diplomatic relations (and no visa agreement) with North Korea. You will have to apply for a visa to visit the DPRK for any amount of time.

Most tour companies, which acquire the visa for you and fly you to Pyongyang via China (rather than South Korea), will ask you to apply for said visa a month ahead of time.

I'd recommend saving yourself the trouble. A visit to North Korea can be easily replicated by combining prozac and alcohol with a trip to Euro Disney.
