My #2 most useful travel item (after my swiss army knife):

Super Glue

On my last trip I used it to:
1. Fix my boots when they were falling apart
2. Put on my feet for a while when I had bad cracked heels
3. Fix my anti-tooth grinding mouthpiece when it broke
4. Close a nasty cut on my finger (super glue is very similar in formulation to the stuff they use in hospitals and it's sterile out of the tube.)

and many other things that escape me for the moment.

And as an added bonus you can buy it almost anywhere in the world.

I discovered too late that I should have packed Imodium when I found myself in a street in Vietnam. There, I frantically mimed out the concept of diarrhea to a beautiful young woman in the pharmacy shop.

In the emergency room a while back I was talking with the doctor patching up a cut over my eye. She said that she takes super glue when she goes hiking for just this purpose. She said that people are occaisionally allergic to super glue, which is why they use special stuff in hospitals, but that it's very rare.

what, no tuxedo?

I'm not sure what kind of shirts you are bringing, but I'd definitely bring a decent microfiber button-down of some sort, so you have something nice to go out in. And your girlfriend should bring one of those folds-into-nothing rayon sundresses for the same purpose. Every now and then you want to look nice, even if you're just strolling around town.

Don't forget a pair of thongs.Keeps all the "nasties" away when using the showers plus very comfy on the feet at the end of the day.

Digital cameras? I bought a Nikkon P2, comes with 1 lithium battery and charger. Suggest you buy a 2nd battery too. Kept the charger in a snap-lock bag . There are more expensive Nikkons around but the P2 was in my price range.

Photo quality is excellent and colours are true to life. They also use SD memory cards which are the mosdt readily available.

Have a nice day, Whistler.

If you can keep a sense of humour and see the funny side of life, you will never be old. SMC.

Don't take anything that is also available at your destination unless it is some expensive item that you already have (like a camera or Tevas). Get on the plane with the bare necessities for the plane ride and a quick change when you get to the destination. I love to constantly wear reminders of where I have been and use items that were bought in various countries - even the Immodium packs!!

Don't forget to take along some tolerence. Traveling is not all clinking beer mugs and sunrises on the beach.

Definitely take a spare battery for your Camera - My one ran out while I was in Jordan...luckily we managed to find a place that was open otherwise I'd have gone to Petra without a camera!!

immodium is a must in Bolivia, though it is easily available, go figure. Purel, be sure to wipe off any windows and the seat in front of you, especially in Bolivia.
As Americans, you do not have the immune system you need in South America. I never got sick in any country there, except BOLIVIA!
