I hope this doesn't come off as bragging, but I just wanted to share that I won an essay contest and am now getting a free trip to Norway this summer! I was heading over for a year abroad in Oslo anyway, so this is pretty much free airfare and a couple nights in a nice hotel, but I'm still excited as hell. Okay, as you were, I just don't think my non-travel friends really appreciate it.

The essay is kind of indirectly travel related, in that it's about the work of Norway internationally. The topic I wrote on was the work of the Norwegian Refugee Council in Angola, Azerbaijan, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Can you believe in all of North America, only 15 people entered?
This whole thing has made me wonder how many little organizations are offering prizes like this for essay contests where almost no one enters. It'd be interesting if BootsnAll could somehow keep a list of contests related to travel, so that BNA members could dominate them all...
No kidding! (and BIG congratulations, by the way) Maybe we can start collecting heard-of opportunities for any travel-related contests, essays, and similar opportunities that the community of BnAers can profit from.

This link will take you to a website that uses a search wizard to look for free money for lots of different types of things, including travel, from lots of different types of sponsors (including The Man ).

Hey congrats! Norway sounds awesome... and as a self-professed viking i feel i should definitely visit the scanidavian countries one day.
just wanted to share my own good fortune too... applied for a "Personal Development Grant" from my employing university back in November, and just yesterday got a letter telling me I will be compensated $1000 to go to the Women's Final 4 in Indianapolis!! The annual coach's convention is there as well, and since i am a coach that's where the "individual development" part comes in. However, mostly it means watching the 3 games, and attempting to network and get myself a new job for next year. Really excited that I dont have to pay for it myself anymore!
Just to further illustrate that money is actually out there. This grant was open to all people who work on this campus and there were only 38 applications.
CHEERS!
