I use a product called Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant. It's applied under the arms before bed and virtually eliminates underarm sweat.

One main cause of rank clothes is all the, well, "pit juice" running down your side and soaking through your clothes. For me, this eliminates it COMPLETELY, and I sweat a lot...

Smelly sweaty boots or footwear? No problem! Place a teabag-- unused of course! in them near the toe area, when not in use. Works a treat all the time. Naturally it's best if they're left in overnight.

Have a nice day, Whistler.

That is excellent advise! I've got to try that, especially since I carry my boots at the bottom of the backpack, rather than tying them to the outside.

One way to get rid of clothing and/or shoe odors instantaneously is to spritz the area with some vodka - we used it in theatre for years before they came out with Febreeze.

Spot on Dangermode, I thought the same thing. Not only the driving bit, but people might think you're a lush!!!??? Smile I think that's the word , you know what I mean anyway. What about perfume? Could you douse your togs in that? Just a though.

Have a nice day, Whistler.

A no-drugs remedy for tooth ache... When tooth-ache starts you know that it is going to last for days or weeks on end until you can get to a decent dentist. You don't want to have to pop drugs constantly.

SOLUTION!! Lodge a whole Clove next to the gum near the offending tooth and against the cheek. It dulls the pain instantly and works for at least a day, although I usually change for a new one at about 12 hours because it starts to get a bit soggy by then. The clove will stay lodged quite well the entire time and I usually forget it is there - even while eating!!

In my little bottle of Nurofen / Ibuprofen I always have a small stash of whole cloves especially for tooth ache. I have heard that you can also use clove oil but I don't know how long one application lasts - I dare say it would last much less than a simple clove and costs a hell of a lot more.

Actually, vodka has no odor so you can't really smell it. The only problem you'd have when driving is if you drink it. Smile

Another trick I learned working in theatre is if you ever bleed on yourself, you can use your own saliva to get the blood out. It has to be your own, though - no one else's will work (it's something about the enzymes in your saliva that break down your own blood cells).

If you tie your bootlaces together before retiring, they don't get lost. A safe to store money (at night) is inside your sock stuffed inside your boots.

I use baby powder all of the time to reduce sweating. It works pretty well.

Okay, this thread has gotten off-topic. There's another thread about what items you wouldn't leave at home over here, so I'm going to get rid of the back-and-forth about that issue in this thread so it can go back to being about "stupid travel tricks" again.

(I'm talking pain here, nowt else...) It's the stuff that folk make a paste of and wipe on their faces, actually quite nice when put on like that...

My sister and I went on an impromptu Eurotrip to "save" my friend who was studying in Florence and miserable.

We didn't want to pay for a hostel, so we brought blow-up pool mats from Wal-Mart. And you know what? Though we stuck to them (it was the summer), they were the MOST COMFORTABLE BEDS we had on our entire trip. It was great. We just had them and had our tiny blankets to cover us. Such a great time.

Europe is definitely not cheap so here is a site that I used and got some good deals in Wien. The reviews also helped.

Other tricks? If you are not happy with your seat assignment on a flight, board last. Like really last. If you see an empty seat that you like better just take it. You might be lucky and keep that seat. Air Canada throws a curve to this plan as they frequently wait for passengers that are late. Oh well, you'll just go back to your original seat, in the unlikely event someone shows up.

I've found that a product called Glide works amazingly well for me on my feet (among other places) to prevent chaffing. They sell it at REI in large deodorant shaped sticks as well as travel size.

Also, I always carry a small notepad and pencil to write down important stuff. It has saved me many times, being able to draw a picture or for writing down addresses and such. Lastly, I sewed 2 bandannas together into a tube and attached a super-tiny safety pin to one of the inside corners. It's the same thing they sell for 30 dollars as a full head cover at hiking stores, and you get to personalize it by choosing your own color/patterns. I fold it flat and keep it in my back pocket.
P.S.
Also saw some bandannas with maps of different places on them, pretty cool idea. Two birds one stone.

I tried it. It works great!!! I will never travel in the hot zone without a small baby powder bottle. (FYI - I have never used roll on anti-perspirants due to chemical concern).

If only I had known this sooner....it would have made some of my prior travels so much more pleasant. Alas...there is the future. So I was wondering what other stupid simple little tricks can you think of that would make traveling alot easier.
(Or use a double layer sock) to avoid blisters.

I've thought about this before but didn't think that it worked. In fact, I'm not quite sure what baby powder is for in the first place.

I will definitely try this in the future, but just one question, how exactly does it keep you from sweating and, does it make a mess? like does the powder fall all over the place and get on your clothes? Or turn into mush when you do start sweating, or?

I swear by Dr. Scholl's Odor/Athletes Foot Spray. Its basically baking soda, so I spray it in my shoes to deodorize and absorb moisture. I've also used it on my clothes when I haven't had time to wash them and needed to freshen them up a little.

Johnson's baby shampoo as shampoo, body soap, and to wash your clothes.

Dettol and a nail brush (good for nail cleaning too) for smelly Tevas.
