Any recommended insurance companies for backpackers?
What is the minimum level of emergency medical cover I should consider? Most seem to be £3m some £5m

If you're a YHA/Hi member they offer rates for backpackers. And they're good rates too - cheaper than others I've found.

I'm not sure of the availability for the UK, but we got insurance through Travelcuts, which is a student / discount travel agent in the Canada. They are very well geared towards backpacking / long-term travel and we got a year's worth of travel insurance (including lost luggage / fligt cancellation) for about $400 CAD.
