I need some advice!
My flight from Nepal in early May arrives at Bangkok airport at 6:10pm (all being well). I reckon this means I won't get into the city until 8:30pm at the earliest.

I'm concerned that this is not a good time for a single woman to start wandering the streets looking for a place to stay!

What are my options? Is it safe? Should I book in advance? Any suggestions? My first choice would be accommodation in the budget sector.

Since nobody else wants to answer I may as well do it. First, you don't have to worry about being a solo female traveller in Bangkok at 8:30 at night. Second, what you want to do is this: buy a ticket from the booth in the arrival hall for one of the air-con buses that go downtown. There are four of these buses and they have different routes. If you want really cheap accomodation then get the bus that goes by Khao San Road. I got a room there a couple of months ago for 100 Baht. It was very basic (a bed, a fan, and a small table) but it was clean and all I needed at the time. I can't really recommend that area though, unless really cheap is what you want. I only stayed there because my flight arrived very late (11:30pm) and I know KSR from earlier trips to Thailand. I would recommend Soi Kasem San 1. It's right beside Stadium Skytrain Station and on one of the airport bus routes. There are several hotels and guesthouses on this soi (soi means lane in Thai). Avoid the Reno. It's overpriced. The rest charge around 400 Baht for an air-con room with bath. In Bangkok, at this time of year, air-conditioning at is a nice feature. Have a good trip.

Hey There!!...When are you going to be in Bangkok..? I'm flying from LA on May 2nd and connecting up with a friend who's coming from Seattle on the same date..we get in about 11:30..if you're interested in a little impromptu company...We'll probably head for the "cheap accomodations" route on Khan San Road....What are you doing in India? you're probably already over there...? I'm looking at heading to northern India after staying in Indonesia for about a month. Happy Days! Marnee.

Here's an easy method and hassle free:

On arrival, go to the official tourist booth (in the arrival hall after customs) and tell them that you are looking for accommodation and give them the price range and area you're looking for. They will give you a list and you can choose from it. You can pay for 1 night's accommodation there and your room is guaranteed. Then go outside (right outside the door) and buy a taxi ticket to where you want to go. Take the ticket into the taxi line and you will be ushered into a taxi and taken to your hotel. No extra payment is needed in the taxi or at the hotel.

These servies will cost you a couple of bucks more than if you mucked around with buses, walking etc but probably only about $US 10 or so.

Get a good nights sleep then find something more suitable.

I believe bus #59 runs from outside Don Muang straight to Ko San Rd, the area with budget accomodation.

BKK is safe, you can walk around and people will not bother you.
