Howdy folks;
We're currently winding down a year long travel that took us to West Africa, the Middle East, India and China. As web professionals we've been particularly interested to see how the Internet is being used, especially in the developing countries. Most everywhere we went we visited cybercafes not just for news and email but with a particular goal in mind. We were maintaining a website from the road without carrying a computer. The experiment was to see if we could create rich-media pages of our writing, post images from our digital camera and manage a simple BBS system relying only on the one piece of software you can count on at a cybercafe - a browser. I'm glad to report that the experiment has been a success. Cybercafes are popping up everywhere - from Nouakchott to Gangtok - and we were able to consistently share a bit of our experiences and impressions with a web readership. A description of the system (a web-based publishing system) and some of the challenges we met can be viewed at: We're now compiling a list of folks who might be interested in using such a system in the future.
