Holds PhD in Packing

I thought this might be useful and interesting. I always try to learn to say the following phrases when I go to a new country with a new language:

1. How much?
2. Help
3. Know how to count to 10.
4. Left and right
5. What is that?

and the most important
WHERE IS THE BATHROOM?

To date I can say "where is the bathroom" in four languages and count to ten in four languages.

If you aren't tired of me yet, read my RTW trip blog at Barry Backpacks Around the World.

Why bother? They all should learn English anyway!!!

(I'm joking...ha ha?)

I have lots of issues with languages, but the few phrase I always sort out are:

* Hello
* Thank you
* Vegetarian?

Smiles, thankfully, are international.

I THINK YOU SHOULD LEARN ALL THE INSULTS FIRST BECAUSE THE GUYS WHO TEACH YOU HAVE A RIGHT LAUGH AS YOU BADLY PRONOUNCE THEM AND ON OTHER OCCASIONS PEOPLE WHO INSULT YOU AND THINK THEY HAVE GOT AWAY WITH IT WILL GET A HUGE SHOCK WHEN YOU GIVE THEM AN EARFULL BACK

Japanese (Gaijin version) DISCLAIMER: these aren't usually quite the right words, and you will say them wrong. But they are short enough to remember, and most Japanese will understand you and appreciate your effort.

1. How much? kore-wa ikuru desu ka?
2. Help sumimasen(excuse me), kiotsukete kudasai (take care), dozo[ (please) [this one is hard. Japanese don't ask for help - I understand that lifeguards have to *watch* for people drowning]
3. Know how to count to 10. ichi, ni, san, chi, go, roku, shichi, hatchi, ku, ju
4. Left and right hidari, migi
5. What is that? kore-wa (this) are-wa (that) nan desu-ka?
6. Where is........(the toilet) (O-teari-wa) doko desu-ka?
7. Hello konnichi-wa, ohayo (gozaimasu)
8. See you later ja, mata [informal]
9. Thank you domo [informal, male], arigato [more formal or female], arigato gozaimasu [formal])
10. Delicious oishe-desu!
11. Is there? / Do you have? ... (name of what you want) arimasu-ka?
12. Excuse me/pardon me sumimasen

a few other useful words and phrases:

please dozo
yes hai [This doesn't always mean "I agree". It can mean "I am listening attentively" or "I really wish I knew what the f$%k you are saying"]
it is different chigimasu [Japanese don't like to say or hear no. It seems impolite. If someone says "it is different" it means no way in hell, but in the nicest possible way]
what is the japanese word for this kore-wa, nihon tango nan desu-ka?
I don't understand wakarimasen
one more time dozo, mo ichido
slowly, please yukkuri, dozo
show me, please misete kudasai

The last few come from studying karate,not having sex. Where *are* your minds???

Asking for beer (Japanese)

(biiru-o) kudasai [You can substitute a name brand, like Sapporo or Kiren for biiru]

If you already have one in front of you, you can point at it and say dozo, mo ichido.
