Such an American statement. People the come to A'dam just to smoke miss the point entirely. It's like the frickin cultural mecca of Europe here... so sad...

I think the fact that when I go places it's usually because someone sent me gives me a different perspective. London? Shanghai? Kyoto? Woohoo! Where's my pack? But even fairly mundane areas can be a hoot under those conditions...it's like a free vacation. I even have fond memories of Mexico City...that trip was so bad it was good, if you know what I mean.

The one place that I can think of that just completely underwhelmed me was San Juan, Puerto Rico. Except for the iguanas mating on the runway, I have nothing to say about the place.

Bangkok. A slightly cleaner, but no less sleazy, tropical Tijuana for Europeans with that oh so subtle hint of Florida. Blech.

LA? What were you looking for - you can see and do most anything in LA. It's 1,000 scripts all playing simultaneously, rather hard to digest.

I haven't checked the rest of the posts in here... but I just wanted to chime in for Miami. South Beach specifically.

COMPLETELY overrated. But that is because i'm bitter because i'm not rich and beautiful!

smells like an industrial waste dump. people drive like coked-up alcoholics having a seizure. and every bar you go into there are prostitutes....everywhere.

not to mention the lovely sound of men hacking up loogies everywhere, drivers honking horns just because they think its music and people screaming into their cell phones since they must not understand it has a microphone.

Been thinking about this a while...and am voting for Vegas. Soooo many people are in love with it, but it is just so repulsive! Yuck! Maybe I have just spent a little too much time there. (The Hoover damn was interesting, though.)

Miami was a candidate for me, but I just do not know it well enough to disrespect.

And, I fully agree with Nerokerr. Amsterdam is an amazing city--full of culture and history and architecture...and so much more than a college-boy-grass-smoking-binge-party-trip destination. gtrob: get yourself a guide book if you ever make it back...give Amsterdam a second look.

Durban, South Africa. I know a lot of people out there who disagree, but I spent 3 days there and couldn't wait to leave.

I didn't expect to see Durban come up here... where and what did you do in Durban that you didn't enjoy it?

Charlestown, West Virgina.

Ok, so no hype, but it was awful. I was looking forward to some redneck charm and home-cooking, and all I saw was Applebees and Chase Bank.

I expected Vegas, LA, even Venice to be on here. I love Venice but the 3 times I have been I was satisfied after one day- couldn't spend more than a few days there at a time, but it's so freaking beautiful and prvincial in a labyrinth sort of way.

LA is in here somewhere, I'm pretty sure. Vegas. That surprises me that it ain't....

Venice. I believe that it's overrated too. The problem is---It's overrated because of ME!

and YOU and YOU and YOU.

There is just far to many tourists there. It's ridiculous. Try some of the coastal towns in Croatia. You'll get Venice for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the people.

I hate to say this, but France...I went with high expectations, but was disappointed by the people (although I did enjoy the scenery). I even learned some of the language before I went but found most locals acted like I didn't exist for the most part. There were exceptions, of course. I was also disappointed by the food, overall - there were some okay moments, but nothing like what I found in Italy or Spain. I probably will never go back (unless someone else is paying for it).

LA is fantastic to all those who hated it! lol, you just need to know someone who lives here to see the city for what it is really worth... I mean, you can do/see anything in this city. I love it, just my oppinion.

I can't believe Amsterdam came up in here! How could they!!!!

Not that traveling 5,000 miles to watch "Friends" isn't worthwhile...

Come on, if you watched friends it's your own fault. I know that is is always playing, but you don't have to go to that cafe. I know that this is not a very culturally interesting place, but it was very fun, and I managed to not watch a single episode of friends.

Surfers, well yeah, this was one of my big ones, but on that same not, how about Queenstown NZ? I lived here for 3 months, and I thought of all the places I went to in NZ(I went almost everywhere)this was definitely over rated.

I think Amsterdam is overrated in the way of the one-track party-mind.
It's an awesome city with tons of history and culture and interesting museums (besides the sex museum). I think people look to it as a place to get their buzz and boner without taking any other looks at the city...making it overrated...in theory.
Because if all Amsterdam was consisted of the RedLight district and smoking hash in cafes then I would be horribly dissapointed with it. Luckily it's much more...and deserves just credit.

IMO, even IF that was all Amsterdam had to offer, it still would not be OVER-rated. It delivers exactly what is promised.

If you think SJ is bad, you should visit Ponce. One of the most boring places I have been to. Gotta go back for work again Mid January for another 10 days of misery. Even the weather does not make me look forward to this...
