Hey all,
My fiance and I are planning to kick off our honeymoon with a week in Bali before heading on to Thailand . . .though the more read about it, the longer I wish we could stay! We really want to get as much surfing in as possible (living in nyc gives us frustratingly little access to waves) but also don't want to miss out on the cultural sites. SO here are my questions: -Where should we base ourselves, hotel-wise, so that we are conveninet to surfing in the morning and sight-seeing in the afternoon? Or is this even reasonable? -What sites/hikes are close to accomodations that are close to the surfing? -Would it make sense to stay near the surfing areas for 5 days and then change hotels to Ubud so we can take advantage of things to do and see around there? Or is Ubud close enough that we wouldn't have to change accomodations? -If we want to see the sites, are we going to have to cut our surfing days short and move on to a different region of bali? We really want everything to just be fun and hassle (ie, not long car rides every day)-free, but we also don't want to miss out on things we should see. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks! |

The real "sites" of Bali is the unique culture which you will find everywhere that you look for it. The cultural experience is available when you just slow down enough to let your eyes refocus and there it is. Try surfing down by Ulu watu and you can see one of the most important temples while you are there. Take one day for Ubud, stay over, then you could go to the mother temple Besikah on your way to the volcano, have lunch with a view, keep going around to the temple at Lake Bratan. There are some OK places to stay overnight there, then head back to the surfing beaches in the south & you have covered all of the high points in a short time with lots of time to surf. Or you could do a "power day,--- early day to Ubud, up the mountain to Besikah, then the volcano then Lake Bratan, stay over and the next day back to surfing. You can hire a driver for $20/day. I bet that you could find some one for $50 US to do this 2 day drive for/with you, but make it VERY CLEAR that you are not interested in any side trips to shops.
My only regret is that I haven't been there yet! |
