Hi,

I have heard of this place called dreamland in Bali, I was wondering is that the actual name of the place there or do they have a local name for it.

On top of that, my friends and I were planning to go there to surf, we are only beginners, only managed to surf a few times in Hawaii, I would like to know whether is it safe to surf there? Are the surf very high during this time of the year. Heard that they have very cheap lodging there, one of them called Robbie and Kid or something like that. Are there surfboard rentals there?

Lastly, Im from Singapore, which is the cheapest way to go there?

Regards,
John

I don't know the real name of 'Dreamland' but it is down on the Bukit. If you need a surf spot map, check out http://www.wannasurf.com. Honestly - even though I haven't surfed Bali (about to go shortly) - I wouldn't advise a beginner to go surf Dreamland or any of the other reef breaks located on the Bukit. If you are not comfortable surfing hollow, fast moving, reef breaks then you could either endanger yourself or someone else. Your best bet is Kuta Beach really. There are plenty of places to rent a board near there apparently. Kuta has tons of surf shops.

Check out Indo Surf & Lingo; great book on surfing bali.

Beginners should stick to Kuta Beach. Dreamland is alright for people who can actually surf but unlike Kuta Beach where the waves start to break 30-40 meters out, in Dreamland it closes out fast and you might get slammed. Its is beach break though.

Stay at the cliffside place at Balangan, the next beach to Dreamland. Cheaper. Beachside places are pretty crap and very cheap.

Here's my guide.

Kuta accomodation here.

dreamland, they call it that way because it was the idea of a former corrupt politician or son of the president, i dont know who any more, to make a place that should become the Beverly Hills of Bali... But corruption scandals put a stop at the plan when it was not even halfway there. But you can still see the 'remainings' :-)

surfin is great way to experience bali,
the non analitical approach to understanding nature around you,
the waves have a way of whispering secrets of excitement and health to you., instead of bringing a board which may cost over a $100 as large baggage easieir to just rent a board on the beach the last time i was there it cost about 50.000 rupies for a few hours

A board should cost 25K rupees for the day, if you don't rent on the beach but from the surf shops around Poppies 1.

We stayed in Komala Indah 1 on Poppies 1 (there is another Komala Indah in Kuta and that place is nice as well) and a double room was 60K (single occupancy 40K). If you want to splash out, the Masa Inn do an air-con double with luxurious bathroom for 150K.

Surf on Kuta beach can be challenging if you catch the big breaks further out, but is ideal for beginners closer in, so it's really the place to 'warm up' and assess your confidence levels before heading elsewhere.

Dreamland is GORGEOUS! Go there and check it out even if you don't surf. It is well worth a lazy afternoon. Especially with all the eye candy walking around down there. Good times.
The day I was there, the waves were overhead. F'ing humongous. Then again, someone there told me "it's a great place to learn on a small day." So who knows. I'd stick to Kuta for learning -- easier to rent boards, easier to get to, cheap and cheerful with a sandy bottom.

...and by the way there are so many cheap places to stay around Poppies 2, e.g.

Chempaka 2 (30,000)

Sukha Beach Inn (40,000 - has pool!)

Gora Beach Inn (30-40k)

All in all, a great value for the money.

Dreamland, on the south side of the island, is beautiful with plenty of very inexpensive lodgings- I think we paid about $6 US a night for a room on the beach (the toilet was up the hill). The surf, however, is not for beginners. Well worth staying for a bit, though, it's so gorgeous.

Dreamland is the largest white sand beach on the western Bukit.

Access is easy, via the wide road Tommy Suharto built. Many beachside warungs. Okay place for intermediate surfers as its a beach break.

Balangan is also a nice beach, just to the north (carrying on along that wide access road, and look for the sign).

Pros: very scenic, good eye candy, topless girls, meet lots of tourists, cheap food/drinks/snacks are available.

Cons: Chairs/Umbrellas are rental only (but very cheap), vendors constantly hassle you, NOT a secluded/quiet beach (if you are looking for that experience)

Dreamland not to bad for a beginner on small days. lately surf on Bukit peninsula has been huge.Balangan has been the biggest i have ever seen it,around corner from dreamland, all reef not for learners. Kuta is a top option for you, also try airport lefts on a 3 to 4 foot day only at high tide. The wave is very forgiving and you can safely sit on the shoulder and watch if you get tired. The price for boat out to airport lefts is approx 25000 30000 rups depends on how sharp your negotiation skills are,and how much buisness the boat owners have on any given day.You should know your own limits in the water, stick to them and have a great trip .Dozer
