Laptop computers have an internal component that can handle voltages from 110-240 volts. This is because manufacturers realized people travel and their laptops were too expensive to lose. Other devices aren't like this. Often you can plug somethnig in and et it to work, with an adaptor, but its best to find a solution where the proper voltage is delivered.

Hi Nick,
My Name is Matt. Planning on moving to Bali sometime next year. Married to a Balinese and we have a son, who was born there. My son is in kindergarten here in the states, but he's only 4 now and will be 5 at the end of Nov. Everything I read says they have age placement for children at the international schools. Is this True? Would my child have to repeat kindergarten if we moved there next year? Any ideas as far as good schools? Thanks |

Hey Nick.
I have an odd request. I just finished reading a book called Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I was really moved by her experience in Bali, and will be spending time in Ubud in November. Was wondering if you know how to find Ketut the medicine man and Waylan the female healer who Ms. Gilbert helped buy a permanent residence??? I would love to pay them both visits. Thanks so much Jen |

Matt,
Proper schooling for young kids in Bali is expensive, 1m rp per month just for pre-school. Not totally sure about what year your kid would end up in. The premo schools are expensive ( Bali International School , Australian School etc.) Sunrise school is cheaper and there are new ones starting all the time. The Canggu school , which is connected to the Canggu Club for some activities will be the future gold standard most likely. Jen, I have heard of the book, though haven't read it. Good luck locating Ketut and Wayan. You will enjoy Ubud. |

Thanks Nick,
I'll do some research over the web on those schools, and probably head over at the end of the year, to check things out. Matt |

Hi Nick,
My sister and I arrive in Bali in Feb with the view of staying indefinitely. We are TESOL qualified and ideally will be seeking English teaching positions. We have heard very mixed opinions regarding the ability of such work in Bali – some say it will be very unlikely to find a job and others say there is plenty of work if you are willing to look for it. I know that if worst comes to worst we will easily obtain a position in east java (Surabaya, sidoarja, jember, malang etc.) but this sort of defeats the purpose of our move. What do you think? Any advice? Very looking forward to getting back to Bali – it feels a lifetime ago but only July last time we got home!! |

I also forgot to ask about Internet Hot Spots in Bali. I know they are everywhere but are they free or do you pay for them?? Thanks.

Teaching English in Bali:
Highly unlikely that you'll find anything here other than private lessons. I have a friend who has lived in Bali for 15 years. He has done English teaching in Korea last year and will probably go to Chiang Mai next year to teach, he'd rather stay here in Bali but there is not the market. Poker games: Not heard of any poker events here. Hot spots: Some charge, some don't. Some of the ones that don't charge have a closed network, meaning you have to ask them for the username / password, others you just rock up and search for new networks. In Seminyak you'll have to pay at Bali Deli, you can get online for free, with a password at JP's Warung and free without at Joulla's. Also Cafe Seminyak and Raja's, both located at Bintang supermarket are hotspots. |

Hi Nick
Trust that 08 has started well for you...we are looking at some direction from you if possible...we are early 40's have a 14 year old son and the plan is to spend 12 months or longer in Bali getting some perspective back on life...thinking the Seminyak area and research todate suggests that rent will be somewhere in the vicinity of USD$15K pa. Note that there is an Australian Int School at Berombokan and have touched base with them for some information - fees I expect will be circa $10K - $15K. Everything would appear to hinge around obtaining the required visa and I suspect that this will also be relevant to school enrolment etc. Any views as to how this can all best be approached would be appreciated. - Long term villa rentals - Schooling - Long term visa...is a business the key? - Anything else of relevance Hope that you have the time to spare to point us in the right direction. Cheers |

Hi Nick,
I will be going to Bali with my wife for our second honeymoon in March '08 (19-22). We'll be staying in Nusa Dua, would appreciate if you can share with us what places to visit and what to do for our short stay in Bali. Anyone going there during that period? Hope we can meet up and make some friends there... cheers all.. |

Hi Malida, Here are the answers that we have come up with after doing the same thing a year ago. Rental of a vila. What do you want? This is a piece of string. You can pay anywhere between US$25k per year and say 40 million Rupiah a year. Up to you! Pools are good, but my kids never swam in ours opting to go to the beach. If you are close enough perhaps you do not need one. Big gardens need to be maintained which means staff or you sacrificing your time. Are you coming here to spend a year weeding? I think not You are suppose to have KITAS to enrol your son at AIS. Bali IDE and other agents are there to sort that out for you but it isn't cheap. Expect to pay A$4-5k all up for it. If you are only coming for the year then I would suggest getting a 6 month social or business visa, heaps cheaper and then extend it for a further 6 months. Again Bali IDE are a very reputable agent for these services. As far as the school goes well tell them it's coming. I know some families who have been saying that for a couple of years. The school is great, both our sons go there, 6 & 11. The teachers are excellent, the classes small so they are focused on your kids and being Aust accredited your son can slip back into the Aust school system without any hassles. Time for bed. I have turned on notifacationb should you want some more info Enjoy your stay in Bali. We are. Ano Don't go into something to test the waters, go into things to make waves. Anon. |

I'm going to bali end of may to about 1st week in june. I've never been and was wondering how risky it would be if I booked only my first couple nights accomodations and just winged it from there. I want to be free to go where I want when I want and not be stuck staying somewhere I might not like or be able to stay somewhere I like longer. I want to stay in somewhat nice hotels. Is this going to work or will I be left without a room?

Hi Hulagirl...
Bet u cant wait to go Bali yeaah I think it's gonna be ok.....but you shud be aware if you go around mid of June til mid of July, it is a long holiday for any school in Indonesia, so i think it's gonna be crowded in Bali. There's a lot of nice hotels in Bali....which area u like? Nusa Dua?Jimbaran?Ubud?Seminyak? u cud check balihotels.com It's better booked ur room thru website or travel agent, the rate is much cheaper than published rate. Pls feel free to ask more if you still confuse or need more info. Have fun |

Lost in Place |
Been away from the BNA site for far too long I see. I'm a 50ish guy from Canada travelling alone (at the moment), presently in Chiang Mai Thailand with too much time on my hands. Considering either Bali (which I know nothing about) or Sri Lanka (of which I have equal knowledge) as my next destination in a week or so. Still some motorcycle toring to be done in the Golden Triangle. Kinda leaning toward Bali for scuba opportunities. Any real-time info for flight prices out of Bangkok and recommended destinations in Bali would be greatly appreciated. I understand that 30 day visa-on-arrivals are in place for Canadians.
Thanks for any and all help! |
