Hi all. I am an American who has been doing some furniture business with some folks in Java for about a year now and have managed so far to do it all via internet. Aside from the obvious communication problems I have found the Javanese to be good craftwman and reliable business types.

I plan to visit Bali and Java in the next month for business and pleasure and was wondering if their is much furniture making in Bali. I am interested in incorporating more carving into some new designs and wondered if Bali might be a better place to do that then Java. I have mainly heard and seen more of crafts type of work in Bali but not much of furniture.

Any suggestions for what areas to start looking in Bali or if you think I would be better off staying in Java?

Terima Kasih

There is a ton of furniture being made here in Bali. You can find it in Kerobokan, Seminyak, Legian and other areas.

Balinese are good carvers too although most of the furniture I see do not have a lot of carving.

Remember when shipping the stuff DO NOT let the shipping company pack it in plastic. Use newspaper. Its the wet season right now so don't let them pack it in the rain. Put it out in the sun for a few hours to dry out. Some companies have the habit of losing your paperwork just before the shipment is about to leave so be aware.

Nick: Thanks for the information. Has life in Bali made you a better person or have you always been helpful?
I have found most of the towns mentioned but was not able to find Kerobokan on any map so far. Where abouts is it??

Thanks again.

You will find beautiful carved funiture in Bali, if you show them a picture, they will carve whatever you like. It is a pretty small place, drive up & down the little roads in those areas & many treasures await you.

Kerobokan is directly north west of Seminyak. Just keep going up Jl. Legian / Seminyak and at the top it turns right and becomes Jl. Raya Kerobokan. Along that street is a ton of furniture and also around the back of the jail, looping back to the Sunset road.

As far as being nice, I am learning from Indonesians how to take more time to appreciate other people.

hello there,

I'd say you get the best quality from furniture produced on Java. And for those looking for a good deal in furniture to set up a bar or restaurant as well as a nice deal for a few single pieces, you should try SQP furniture.
the man lives in Legian.
I dont like making publicity but i know he delivers good material.

If anybody would like to know more, just ask me oke.

How much does it cost to get this furniture shipped to the United States? I'm asking as an individual with an apartment to furnish, not as an entrepreneur with the means to import huge quantities.

I have only shipped in bulk container quantities as air shipping even the smaller items can be at least $500.00 to $1000.00. If you want to order some of the furniture from us you can find us at http://www.harmonyindesign.com We are located in Colorado. Thanks: JIM
