Okay, I admit I haven't done much research on Bali thus far, but it seems to be the only Indonesian island people ever talk about with such excitement/intrigue.

I'm considering overlanding from Thailand to Bali, so I'm wondering: What is it about Bali that's so good?

Well Joe looks as if you are soon to find out what why Bali is so special.Everything in bali is affordable--Accomodation,transport,food-entertainment.If you travel there alone not only will other tourists talk happily to you but the Balinese people in shops, resturants bars ect love nothing better that a good old chinwag with the customers.
Our very well travelled friends from Northern Ireland, met us in Bali in September---their verdict-"loved every minute of it".They plan to meet us there, again in 2007.Meantime hubby and I are going up there again in march for a "wee bali fix"We can never last a full year without a bali hol.Although we live in Aussie hubby is English and I am Northern Irish so it's not only an Aussie and Kiwi delight.
Hope your RTW trip is great.
Cheers laurs

Hey thanks Laurlaurs! I'm really looking forward to my RTW actually, can't wait - although money-wise I have to wait, until June '06 to be precise. Bali wasn't originally part of my plans, but it's slowly working it's way into my itiniery the more I hear about it. Enjoy your 'wee bali fix' in March, hope you have a great time too.

Bali is a special island because of the people and the culture, which goes back to the religion. Balinese are Hindu and have adapted the religion into their own form, called Agama Hindu.

THere is probably no other culture where daily rituals, the giving of offerings, decorating things with cloth and flowers mean so much and are so interwoven in daily life. For sure there are hassles and you have to make an efort to get away from thm, but you can find a great place with lovely people.

Joe
Just a wee warning.Don't let a "wellmeaning " agent in UK arrange your Bali entry visa for you.Just get yourself $25 US and pay at the Visa on Entry counter at bali airport. Before we put our aforementioned friends right thieir agent was offering to arrange their Visas for a princely sum of approx 85 pounds each !!!!!!
Cheers Laurs
