I've had some friends tell me to be careful when I go to Bali because they got sick from the food. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything I can do as a pre-caution to avoid this? Places or things to avoid eating or drinking? Thanks for any info.

You should not have a problem. Remember to drink bottles water rather than from the tap.

If you do get sick, avoid green vegetables for 3 days, eat only plain food (bread, potatoes, rice, chicken breast etc. ). Remember to stay hydrated, plenty of water and the odd Pocari Sweat on a hot day.

Definitely drink bottle water. Some of the food maybe a little spicy and maybe that is what made them sick. However there is so many resturants that have "American" food, that if you want to stay away from the Bali spicy food, you can.Bali is great , been there twice and going back in Feb 2008. Go Bows or its Go Warriors now. John

We always take Travelan, avalible from the pharmacy for about AD$25 you get enough for about 2 weeks per person. You take before each meal, or get Buscapan from your pharmacy. This is taken if you get an upset tummy. It is also avalible at any phamacy in Bali. As long as you stay clear of the water, you will be ok, and if something doesnt agree with your taste, dont eat or drink it. Mark n Donna

The only time I got sick during my 30 days there was when I ate at a hotel for dinner where I was the only guest. Should have known better. No way they can keep food fresh.

Bottled water is the way to go, but be kind to the environment and try to refill with mineral water when offered at various hotels or restaurants around the island. Or buy a big bottle and refill smaller ones from it. Plastic trash is a big problem in Bali.

Hi hulagirl, the best way that i choose a place to eat, is to see how many westeners are dinning as im walking past. Anymore than 5 seems to be a fair indicator but the more the better.

Bring a bottle of apple cider vinegar with you from The States. Dilute a bit of it 50/50 with
water and drink it at the very first sign of of food poisoning or upset stomach, aching anywhere in the body, etc.
It's one of those few home remedies that actually works.

Also raspberry cordial (red) is really good. You can bring this in from our home place. 1 drink in the morning and that will do the trick. Also don't eat from the vending carts on the sidewalks. They taste great, but make you really sick. Ask for no Ice in your drinks as well (hard when drinking).

I believe the technical term for this is 'Bali Belly'.
