I am planning a two week trip to bali this summer. I want to stay in seminyak for sure, and then see and possibly stay in in lovina, ubud and nusa dua. My question is, should I rent a car for my whole stay, or just have drivers take me from one stop to another, or just do day trips from semninyak. my other thought is to stay in seminyak for a week, then have a driver take me to lovina for 4 or 5 days and then just have a driver take me back to the airport. i would appreciate any thoughts on this. thank you.

Seminyak is great for shopping, restaurants nightlife, a good place to start. Ubud is definitely worth it for the culture, dances, arts & crafts, surrounding village etc. Lovina is okay, but you'll need some kind of transport. Forget Nusa Dua, there's very little traditional culture there and the place feels like a retirement home.

I might suggest Amed (& the coastal villages in that area as another place you might enjoy.

If budget is your priority, take a Perama bus from Kuta to Ubud, Lovina, Amed.

If mobility is your priority, you might start out by hiring a car & driver for the trip to Ubud. Basically you agree a fee, and give him a bit extra for a place to stay, agreeing to meet the next day for a drive or whatever. Maybe you could get the bus from location to location and hire a car & driver locally, on the days when you feel like exploring the immediate area. On other days just rely on foot transport or taxis.

Having some wheels definitely opens up Bali for you, of course you don't want to feel locked into having to have a car & driver.
