I am considering climing Gunung Rinjani on Lombok in June / Juky next year. I have seen references to the danger of attack from criminal elements, sometimes with violence. It appears that you are more susceptible if you make the climb alone, without a guide. I would do it that way, because I would make the ascent from one side, and go down the other.

Does anyone know if this is a real danger? If so, I would make plans to go elsewhere.

Haven't heard anything a about Rinjani especially but anywhere there are toursits, during this time of economic downturn, a solo traveler will be at more risk than a couple or a group. My feeling is you will be okay.
