We went to Mt Bromo a couple of weeks ago. Arriving in the village at 2am we choose to walk to Mt Bromo and not wait for the tourists or catch a jeep.

We arrived at the top (bring something to cover your face in case the wind blows the sulphur your way) and as the sun started to rise, we could see the lights of the 4WDs coming down the far side.

The sun continued to rise, and the 4WDs got closer

The sun was up and then we started to see other people on horses below us dismount then start climbing the stairs.

We had witnessed the full sunrise and were the only ones who did. Everyone else arrived after the event, spent a few minutes at the top and left!

They had risen early to see the view from Mt Bromo in broad daylight *LOL*

So if you want to see the sunrise, which is truly spectacular and surreal, go to Mt Bromo under your own steam!

The walk is about 3ks, mostly across sand. Look for the white stone markers. On the other side is the climb up then the last part are the stairs. Enjoy!

Brings back memories. In 1993 myself and a friend stayed in the Lava losman on the crater rim. We watched the dawn from the rim which was awesome.

For people who have not been to Mt. Bromo, the small volcano, that constantly emits sulphur, sits next to another small volcano, Mt. Batok, inside a massive caldera (crater). As the sun rises the colors change and its rather like looking at Saturn, with the rings of sulphur in the air glowing red, purple, orange in the light.

The temperatures are cool and the locals ride little ponies across the flat, dusty crater floor, a surreal environment.

Incidentally, my friend and I hiked down into the crater with our packs from the location of the guest houses and out the other side of the crater, continuing 25km through a valley that was steeply sloped with wonderful rice terraces.
