I'm close to buying the 6 continent option, but am concerned about a few things:

first, it's more than $5K, which isn't cheap

second, the agent mentioned that there may be additional booking fees. how much do these fees end up being?

third, there seem to be a lot of restrictions placed around how many segments you can fly on a continent, the length of stay, etc. i am especially concerned about having to book flights several weeks out

how flexible really is the oneworld RTW ticket?

at this point, $5K does seem a lot cheaper than if i bought the flights one-way, individually, but i'm concerned about the extra fees that i don't see now.

i'd love to hear from people who've actually bought and traveled on the oneworld explorer RTW ticket

Hi Janimal,

what is the trip you are looking to do? Generally speaking teh OW Ex is a very good value ticket. I've rarely come across anyone that has exceeded the sectors per continent rule on these and remember the new 16 sector rule (see other posts) is due to come into effect shortly.

The OW airline group have some of the best carriers around and the ticket itself is pretty flexible once away. Its difficult to say just what the service charge will be for your ticket as it varies from agency to agency (in the UK its normally around the £100 mark to give you some idea).

Just be careful which OW ticket you look into as there are two main ones. A OW alliance ticket (based on continets) and the Global Explorer (based on mileage).

i bought my 20 segment ticket last week, waiting for it to come in the mail now.

i didn't really have any problems booking it.

there a lot of restrictions, i read the terms and conditions several times to make sure the thing worked for me and none of the continent restrictions even came close to hurting me, but everyones trips are different...

i'm gonna guess you've used their online itinerary builder, if not definitely do that. it will tell you if your route violates any of the continent segment rules of any of the other restrictions.

http://www.innovata-llc.com/onw/rtw/default.asp?show=RTW

when you book the ticket you can book flights up to around 11 months in the future, so i only have dates for half of my flights. the rest are all open dated and i can call the later when the dates i want are added to their system and pick whatever dates i want.

plus i can change (and probably will) some of the dates for the flights i do have dates for. the only flights you can't change dates for are all flights up to and including your first international flight. after that any dates can be changed free of charge so it's really quite flexible in that regard.

my base fare for 6 cont. was $5500 and with taxes it was $6000, there was only a $15 ticketing fee. cheaper than all my flights bought separately.

one more thing, if you are planning on using more than 16 segments don't wait much longer it took them several days to ticket my fare. the day you call them to book it will not be the day it is ticketed and May 31st is the last day anything over 16 segments can be ticketed. give yourself 2-3 at least.

good luck with your booking!
