I just got back from opening a checking account with Capital One and the terms are so great that I thought I would share with everyone.

If you live in Louisiana or Mid-Eastern Texas then you can go into a branch and open up one of these accounts. Here's what makes it so good for travel:

  • You get 4.0% APY on your checking account balance for the first year.
  • When making purchases abroad with your debit card, Mastercard usually imposes some percentage of the transaction as an international exchange fee but Capital One will refund this charge.
  • If you keep a $1000 bonus then Capital One will not charge you for using any ATM and will also refund the charges that other ATMs charge you automatically.
  • You can set your daily maximum withdrawal limit to whatever you want.

I realize that there may not be many booties that live in this area but if you do, you cant beat this account.

If you don't live in TX or LA, you can open up a money market savings account online with capital one, which gives similar benefits.

I can't find the account that you are talking about on Capital One. What is the name of the account. I want to try to get this account before I leave on Feb 5th for my around the world.

The closest thing that I have found to this account in through Compass Bank.

Thanks for your help.

The one that I have is the Capital One Rewards Money Market Account. If you go to the Capital One website, and click on Direct Banking, you will see it on the right hand side.

But if you are going so soon, then I would suggest NOT using this account because it takes about 3 weeks for them to process your info and get your ATM card to you. Plus, they lock out your initial deposit for 10 days. It takes basically a full month to get the account set up (I don't know why --- but it definitely is not "no hassle").

PS. They also are the best deal going in terms of credit card fees overseas. At least as of last year.
