I've read a lot of people on here talking about traveling around the world and the prices of it, but do many people on here do rtw "living?" I have my tickets booked to head to Berlin at the beginning of February and I intend to stay there until the end of July. I will be taking a lot of little side-trips around, but I'm getting an apartment with a friend there.

After that, we're probably heading going Morocco -> Egypt -> Dubai -> Mumbai -> Thailand -> Nepal -> Bangladesh -> Laos -> Cambodia -> Singapore -> Hong Kong -> Taiwan -> Seoul -> Tokyo -> New Zealand -> Honolulu.

I'm booking an RTW ticket on the Star Alliance and want to hit all of these places, but I intend to spend a few days in most of them and a few months in a handful of them (probably Morocco and somewhere in SE Asia that's cheaper).

I have the advantage of being a musician so I can make money on the road (and that's the primary reason I'm moving to Berlin) and also having a lot of friends around the world from it, but I'm still worried about how much money I'm going to need.

I'm hoping the living will be a lot cheaper than travel, but I was wondering if anybody had experience and could give me some tips.

Thanks!

A lot of views there atomly, so I'll give you my two bobs worth.

For sure when you are in one place for any reasonable length of time, you ought to find that living will be cheaper than travelling through as you'll have less in way of transport costs, find out about weekly/monthly tix etc., cheaper digs, cheap eats and cheapest food/grog buys.
You'll meet people hopefully who will take you hear and there, andas you say, you have friends already.

In some ways, the longer a stay, the more rewarding a travel experience it can become as well - having spent six months on and off in Zurich, I was continually finding out more and more about the city - could go back there and it would still feel like a second home.

I agree with the above comments. Staying somenwhere longer can often mean you meet more locals as they don't see you as some transient. I staying in one place in NZ for 4 months and met lots of locals and friends for life.

I'll have to also agree with the above. I have a second home in the Virgin Islands even though I own no property there. I lived there for a lowly (but amazing) 7 months and that time rewarded me with many things, not the least of which is a safe haven if I ever need one when in the area.

This has also become my form of "travel", one way tickets and new homes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll have another door-mat somewhere in the South of Asia soon.

Wow, that's an awefully ambitious travel schedule - especially if you're planning on "living" in one place for a few months in the middle.

Remember that most RTW tickets are only good for 12 months. Its not worth it if you're going to have to rush through your last few destinations.

The travel agents don't tell you this, but you can actually buy most of a RTW ticket, but leave it incomplete. You might not get the advantage of super low fares on your last leg or two, but at least you'll be able to do the trip on your own time schedule.

Yeah, we're actually going to Berlin for six months, coming back to the US for two weeks and then embarking on the rest of the trip. I'm a little worried that we're biting off too much, too.

Could you elaborate on that a little bit please? Do you mean buy an RTW and just bin it if and when it no longer fits one's schedule?

I'm debating with myself over the whole RTW ticket/make it up as I go thing at the moment.

Thanks very much.
