Hey I'm leaving for a RTW in 5 weeks and 2 days and i havn;t got any shots.. I'm doin USA / South & Central America / NZ / Oz and SEA
I won't be in SEA for another 1 or 2 years. Does this matter when getting shots now? Also i read that HEP B takes 3 injections over 6 weeks. I've only 5 left... What will i do? can i get 2 here in Ireland and the other one in USA (my first stop)? or will he squeeze me in in 5 weeks? Please help I'm freaking out!! |

You should just about be ok, but I'd get going tomorrow with it.
Hep B and Rabies (if you choose to have it) are 3 shots over 4 weeks...0,7 and 21 days if memory serves. If you havent had your tet/dip/polio go get that one sorted. I was able to have my typhoid at the same time as TDP. Depending on where you are going you may need a Yellow Fever jab. These can only be adminstered by an authorised yellow fever clinic (Nomads for example CAN do it). They normally like to leave this a week or so after the other jabs). You may be require dto show you have been vaccinated if your passport shows stamps from YF countries. I'm sure you could get things done in the US but your costs will likely rise compared to Ireland (I dont know taht for sure I just remember people comparing prices round here some time ago). I had teh Hep A booster while I was in Oz so its possible to get that one done (Its 6-12 months after the first vaccine). |

Ok thanks a million,
So 3 shots over 4 weeks? That's a relief.. maybe it takes 6 weeks for it to kick in and maybe that's what i read. I'll go in about it tomorrow. I'll get what i can done in my local clinic.. |

You should really be talking to a doctor...especially one that might have traveled to explore whether you really need Yellow Fever. The travel nurse insisted that I needed a Yellow Fever shot and while I had taken half of it the doctor who heard about my story (long story short I had to take this shot over a hour because of my allergies to eggs). He came and told me I did or anybody who was doing a "tourist" trail does not need Yellow Fever shot.
So talk to your doctor and tell them your travel plan..what you will be exposing yourself to. If you are doing to be living on a farm in Central America for 3 months then they can recommend the best vaccintions. First things first I would protect myself with water borne diseases. So once you make a list with you doc take the most important ones..i'e more likely to get diseases. Good luck I'm Flickring away... http://www.flickr.com/photos/mreddy "The difference between loneliness and solitude is your perception of who you are alone with and who made the choice." --anonymous quote |

Just remember, even if one really doesn't need a yellow fever shot, proof of a yellow fever vaccination can be required when entering some countries after leaving a country endemic with yellow fever. |
