My friend and I are planning to leave (we're in Eugene Oregon) in mid august. we plan to spend about 3 months traveling east by way of hitchhiking, ridesharing, maybe train hopping, using as little money as possible. were on our way to montreal and then from there to NYC to fly out to europe. planning on starting in Berlin and hitching around until our visa comes up and then spending 3 months in the U.K Wwoofing until we will be allowed back in the schengen zone. were both planning on having about 6000$ and were hoping to stretch it out for at least a year. after heading back to the european continent we would like to choose another direction to go but are not sure based on money and visa issues. any thoughts about feasibilty, or advice on any aspect of this trip would be much appreciated. where is the cheapest place in europe to fly into from nyc? dublin, frankfurt? your thoughts

YOu're picking two of the most expensive countries to travel in - and a fairly tight budget. You could probably do it, but is that really how you want to travel?

from nyc i would say london heathrow would probably be the cheapest way in although dublin is a good call as well. 3 months in the uk will eat funds, no matter how you live and there aren't that many jobs going unless you want min wage and even then there is plenty of competition.
in uk i would look at megabus for bus routes and these can be done fairly cheaply. Book stuff in advance and try to avoid spending to much in london. If you work you can do it, all depends what kind of experience you want. |

understood that the U.K is expensive but we hope to find either Wwoofing or Workaway jobs in exchange for room and board, last i checked the U.K had 200+ Wwoof member farms.
in response to nancy SV we really do wish to travel this way, in my opinion its the entire spirit of vagabonding, to make do with what the circumstance allows because there is no other choice available. i know it sounds romanticized but weve put alot of serious thought into this and its a lifestyle that seems most appropriate. thank you for the advice, both of you. any one have anymore? |

i like the idea s2. i've lived this way in the u.s. for years, making use of what lended itself. i've never tried this in europe - the only thing that would seem to be a hassle would be the paperwork of traveling around through asia and so on w/o proper docs. good luck!
