I know there are a few posts about touring already kicking around.. but it's now in my head..

Through the next month or so I'm putting together a touring bike and will start training while saving money until next year.

After getting back from my year in NZ, one month "settled" and need to know what's next. I think I'm on to something here.

Not sure where I'll head off to yet, most likely work my way down to S.America for a year or so. Smile

I have something to look forward to now!

Another convert! Wink
I suggest to do a couple of smaller tours before you head out on the big one. Do a month in the States or Canada. a) You'll see if you really want to do this and b) you'll learn a lot that will be usefull on a long trip.

Sounds like a great plan, expired. We're sitting in the same boat then. We'll head out to Asia next year to tour around. It's going to be at least 12-14 months. If we decide to ride through Tibet to (and then around) India, it's going to be more like two years.

Eventually the misery in Oz comes to an end. Well, at least now I can see the end. Life's good again.

New Frame & Fork came in about a week ago, most of the rest should be here soon.

Someone at work has a good Canadian route; Smithers BC -> Prince Rupert (1-night along the way), then ferry to Port Hardy (Northern port on Vancouver Island), then down the island to Nanaimo. Should be 5-7 days. We're thinking Sept for that one weather wise.

Cheers

And he goes for a Surly. Very sexy, expired.

The week long trip will give you a good notion of what to expect while bicycle touring.

One tip: once you have put all gear together - cut it in half, at least! Especially cloths - you don't need much. Two pairs of (cycling) shorts, two jerseys and ONE set of cloth to wear when you happen to go to a pub after a long day's ride. The rest should be 'supporting' gear like camping gear, toiletries, tools, etc.
