Ok I have one more question at this time. Excluding your airfare, how much money do you need to do a RTW trip? Now what I am specifically looking for is a base amount of money that you know you would need to consider doing this type of trip.
The trip I am thinking of doing is somewhat like this Vancouver-Hong Kong-Nepal-India-Thailand-Malaysia-indonesia Australia-New Zealand-South Africa-Europe-Vancouver.

Mark,

That's a complicated question. Factors include, where you are going, where you'll be staying, what you want to do, eat, drink, how close to other toursits / travelers you'll be.

Obviously partying it up in Hong Kong will cost an arm and a leg ( I know I used to live there ) and using local buses to cross Asian countries will be cheap.

You've got to figure westernized places will cost more than developing places and the more moving around you do the more money you'll spend.

If you spent $20 per day for a year that would equal $7,300. Of course you could cut that in half by spending more time in palces like Nepal, India, Indonesia etc.

I find that having contacts around the world is an awesome way to make my cash last longer. I stayed with friends in southern Germany on their dairy farm for a month.

Get in touch with BootsnAll members, it will help.

Here's a page of traveler profiles. You can get an idea of what these people spent.

Obviously factors like how you spend money, what you want to do, how slowly or quickly you want to travel, and where you go will be hugely important in what you spend. I think about $1000 US a month is a good estimate for the less expensive developing world, assuming you want to do activities and see tourist attractions along the way. You'll want more in Europe though Smile

You can get by on less money, generally with couchsurfing, WWOOFing, or just moving around less or covering a smaller region of the world.

You know, this is a good question. it seemed that when i started planning my trip a couple years ago 10k was def. enough. I don't think that's true anymore and everywhere i keep reading and blogs that I follow I think i'm right. I'm sure you could do a rtw for dirt cheap if you really wanted but would it really be that fun? I have been struggling w/ this question for a while now being that everything that i've seen looks more like 20k and keep in mind immunizations and getting out the door will cost you a couple grand.
