Very excited to report that I gave notice and am officially leaving April 1 (with another BnAer) for a RTW. Rough itinerary is below. I fully expect to hear that we're packing in too much and we just may be, but there's only one way to find out, right? Smile

April 1 - NYC --> Santiago, Chile

April 3 - Santiago --> Punta Arenas
[Patagonia]
[Up to Atacama and Lake Titicaca]
[Arequipa, Peru --> Cusco --> Salkantay trail toMP]
[Cusco --> overland to Bolivia (LaPaz)]
[Salar de Ayuni]
[La Paz --> Santa Cruz]
[Fly Santa Cruz --> Buenos Aires]

June 16 - Fly Buenos Aires --> Cape Town
[Cape Town --> Garden Route --> J'burg]

July 9th - Fly out of Johannesburg --> Kilimanjaro

[Full moon Kilimanjaro climb from July 11th-20th]
[Safari - Serengeti/Taragire/Ngorongoro crater & empakai]

early Aug - Fly Kili Airport --> Cairo, Egypt

Mid-Aug - Cairo, Egypt --> Tel Aviv, Israel

Early Sept - Tel Aviv, Israel - Moscow, Russia

September: Trans Siberian Railway (Moscow, Siberia, Mongolia),ending in Beijing.

From there, I've...really got no clue. Of course, that's part of the fun. General gist is: China, Nepal, India's golden triangle, SEA and then eventually down to Oz/NZ (and Tazmania - wee!) and the South Pacific, then from the South Pacific back to Canada.

Hurray! Blog forthcoming. This is absurdly exciting.

That sounds fabulous!
I love that you're leaving it open-ended. My gf and I are leaving for a 6 month trip back to NZ in 10 days. We don't have the final few legs of our trip planned yet, but I still can't decide whether to book flights and set things in stone or just go and sort it out as we travel.

Anyhow, good luck and have fun!

How exciting! I want to go to all of those places too. Have a great time and be sure to post now and then from a far-flung internet cafe. I often wonder what the people who have departed are doing. I guess I should bookmark their blogs and so on.

That itinerary actual sounds pretty good! one thing i never get though, is why everyone is so attracted to australia/new zealand.

i live in australia and let me tell you, it's boring. BORING.

Just because there's so little to do in such a huge space...argh. i need to get away.

Anyways, sounds great. good luck and have fun!

Thanks for the supportive responses! I'll post the blog when it is up and running. Like Malena, packing has me in a tizzy - with Kili (sleeping at Crater camp at minus-very-cold-degrees) and the to Cairo in AUGUST (eep! 45C!) I'm really struggling with what to bring and how to make it all work.

Still trying to figure out the laptop question - I had ordered an Asus EEE PC but it doesn't have much storage and I'm debating a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet instead since it's more portable.

All these things to thing about! I guess the good thing is that once I'm off, it won't matter - I'll just have to make do with what I've got Smile

I thought long and hard about the laptop, especially for music making on the road, but I realised I would be just too paranoid about it, and the weight of my 15" macbook pro was the final nail in the coffin.

The silver lining is having a Nokia N95 - I have 8gb on just one card - it acts as a second iPod, second digital camera, I can keep my lists in XLS and view them (like the places I have been told about that I want to remember), I can keep copies of key docs on there, I have downloaded some maps just in case, and with WLAN I can use the Internet, check mail and use Internet banking where I can find WiFi. It will even be handy as a second alarm clock. And I can record audio on it (song ideas, guitar riffs etc.)

The last thing I intend to do is make a call with it (or use the GPS) because then it is all free! Woo Hoo. Let's see how long I can stick to that...

Your whole itinerary is amazing, but this part stands out! Did you see that really good thread on the Trans-siberian route?? I think Sophie9 had some REALLY good input, I learned alot.

I see you're from Montreal, mind if I pm ya.

@Travel_Tech: feel free!

Thanks for the additional input. I did see the Trans-Sib threads, and I can't wait to get on those trains and to see Lake Baikal in the flesh! Smile Slowly cobbling together the blog (am still working until Mar 14), and all of this is still so surreal - it feels great to actually take off!
