First of all, since this is my first post ever, let me just say how truly wonderful this board and community is. Everyone is so supportive, so warm, and so good-hearted. There are VERY few places online that feel like this and I'm excited to finally be a part of it.
Anyway, I'll give my background some other time. For now, I have a question/proposition for you. I'm going to wing it and just buy tickets as I go (I love the idea of that by the way). I imagine that when you guys get to the internet cafe, you have a small battery of airfare websites you comb through to find the best price.
Can we use this thread to list out the ones you regularly use, and it'll doubly serve as a nice repository for when we're on the road and can just pop up this thread and click through the links people post.
Or maybe the answer is just to click on the "International Airfare" tab in the upper left?

Well i have to say I am a fan of Ryanair in Europe - can't beat their super low fares! Spirit Air to the Caribbean is pretty good as well and cheap. However, the seats are really stiff.
I'm actually from San Diego myself I'll be heading back down there before I take off for my trip.
Looks like nobody else is enthused about this thread at the moment, but I'll add myself for the time being...I was just reading another thread where someone recommended www.airninja.com. Looks pretty cool.

Kayak is the main site I use. I think it covers everything, but you might double check if it hits some of the smaller, budget airlines. I believe it does though. In addition, when you do a search on Kayak, it also gives you the option of simultaneously checking Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity.
I like Kayak as well. I booked our first flight for our rtw through kayak. St. Louis to Lima, Peru - $750 total for my wife and me. It was almost double that everywhere else I looked.
I think this thread is a great idea. We will be flying from South America to SE Asia, and preliminary looking has not been encouraging. So I'd love to see some suggestions on where to look for certain legs of our trip.

Someone on BnA (apologies, I don't remember who...) pointed me to Airninja, an amazing site which consolidates pretty much all the discount airlines in the world.
You just pick a city and it will tell you all the discount airline flights in and out of it.
I love this site!

For the respective recommendations for kayak.com and airninja.com, would you guys say you use those pretty much exclusively when you're buying tickets as you go around the world? Are there other global "consolidator" type sites you use? Or is it best to use certain sites for certain regions?

nstar - do budget airlines fly into minneapolis? i think airninja focuses exclusively on those guys (as opposed to airlines like united, american...etc).
momondo.com looks like it's another potentially good site.

I'm using STA Travel for my RTW flight. It's great if you're under 26. I'm flying from Ne York to Iceland, Iceland to Norway, Rome to Malaysia, then some flights to Thailand, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, then New Zealand back to New York. The cost is $2200. When you factor in fuel tax and surcharges, the grand total is just $2900.
