Folks, First Hi! This is my first post to BnA and I'll try to make it a good one..
I have *just* begun planning an RTW trip with my wife. We are looking at all the different options for travel and right now we're leaning toward the backpacker/hostel/family friends option due to cost and, honestly, that just seems like more fun. One of the ideas I am kicking around is to do this RTW trip with NO air transportation. Transatlantic and transpaific voyages are easy to find, but I need some resources for trans-siberian (or other options) travel and also oceanic travel options. Does anyone have any experience in these areas and have some links/pointers on how to even start planning for this? Thanks! |

try G&R international and waytorussia.net
When I looked into it, all the trips organised as tours were very expensive better to doi yourself |

Trans-Sib is certainly not going to be your biggest issue. From Beijing to St. Petersburg is well connected and a lot of fun to travel.
I believe you're issues will be finding cheap boats to cross the oceans. I had a look into this for a while and generally it seemed, that it's cheaper to fly than to take a boat. If you have no time constraints whatsoever, hitching rides in boats might be a possibility, I know two people who got around like this. But it's rather unreliable. You're main problems will be getting from OZ to Africa or NZL. And/or from the Americas to NZL. I heartely recommend reading Peter Moore's book The Wrong Way Home. He basically did the trip from London to Sydney overland. You'll get some idea of the problems he encountered as well as the plus points. That and its a damn good read!
