I have been to the Everest base camp, about fifteen years ago. PS: I did not ride a horse and paid for my vaccinations.

It's a pretty easy trek. It can be really cheap as well, if you take a bus to Jiri instead of flying to Lukla...

Sorry to hijack this thread but is Bangkok the only real option for getting to Kathmandu from Se Asia? It also seems so damn expensive for a three hour flight!

Never been to base camp, but I did the trek to Gokyo Ri and Kala Pattar 18,450' (which actually looks down on base camp). Had the option to continue on to base camp, but was so damn wasted from the altitude that my Sherpa and I just went back to Lobuche for a bit to eat and then down to Pangboche. Never been so exhausted in my life!! But definitely worth every head pounding step! I flew into Lukla and it was an 18 day trek up and back (April 1999). When I go again it will be in October. Good luck.

Me wonders how fit one has to be to try an 18 day trek?

I am planning of doing the Lukla to EBC trek in Mid April. I will be carrying my own gear and was wondering if a 65L pack would be sufficient. Obviously I will be trying to go as minimalist as I can but should I be looking at bringing more gear? I was looking into buying a Down Jacket before going but I will be spending 4 months in Australia before hand so if I don't need to drag one around the beach I won't bother. Any advice is appreciated.

It's easy and cheap enough to pick one up in Nepal.
