I am planning to travel from Thailand to Delhi overland on my RTW trip. (I'll reach Thailand approx. May 2004). Has anyone out there done this before? Got any tips? What's the best way to approach this? I would like to include China and Tibet in my route.

Even if you wanted to avoid China and Tibet, you couldn't -- since it is not currently possible to go overland via Burma. If I were you, I'd enjoy SE Asia for several weeks/months -- Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, maybe Vietnam -- then head north into China via Laos or Vietnam. From there, it's a matter of how ambitious you want to be in China. Definitely hit Yunnan and Sichuan provinces before traveling on to Tibet. From Tibet, you can go overland to Kathmandu, then on to India from there.

Does anyone know if the boarders in Burma(to Bangladesh or India) are still closed? I'd like to go into Bangladesh overland from Burma, but I may have to take a boat. Wanna travel as much as possible without flying, just a little more challenging and memorable. Thanx.

Though there are land borders between Thailand and Burma (I crossed the border at Mae Sai, Thailand, and spent a few hours walking around the Burmese border town of Tachileik), once you are in Burma, travel is limited to certain areas. As far as I know, you cannot go overland from Thailand to India via Burma. You would have to go to Vietnam (I believe even the Lao-Chinese border is closed to Westerners), cross into China, then go through Tibet and Nepal then into India.

Began Gap Year Trip Six Years Ago |
I know this is an old thread. But as it has bumped anyhow, I might just add a few things - for informations' sake.
When I was in India (and had a look into going to the Andaman Islands - which luckily I didn't, otherwise I'd have been there when the Tsunami hit), there were reports that a ferry service between Thailand and the Andamans would open up 'next year' (that would be 2005 then). Now, I don't know if that ever happened - or if some political issues (coup in Thailand) or the Tsunami halted that plan. Have a look into it. Also, (this won't help you much - but just FYI), there is a highway being built between Burma and Bangladesh - so, in the years to come, it might (maybe, maybe, maybe) be possible to travel Thailand - Burma - Bangladesh - India. Which would just be fantastic. The only other option than China-Tibet-Nepal is even longer: China-Pakistan-India. But it's a great, great route and if you have time, I seriously recommend taking it. ---------------------------------------------- My personal travel website. www.aresthetics.ch/trav ------------------------------ "Nationalism is an infantile disease, the measles of mankind." Yes it is an old thread...but
The "ferry" service between Andamans and Thailand was never more than a pipe dream. There is deepening ties between the two, but India has decided to really push tourism on the Andamans and isn't so keen for other countries to make money on their resources. So the most likely development will be flights between either Phuket or Bangkok and Port Blair. A ferry is likely to take 2 or three days, and the number of passengers would be so low... |

Hi,
I've read many threads now about the possibility of overlanding from Thailand to India. It's a fairly conclusive 'no' that you can't travel through Myanamar, you can only fly in/out or visit for a few hours. Therefore it seems that the route is Tibet, Nepal and potentially China. However, I can't seem to find practical information from people who have actually done it. (Probably looking in the wrong places) I'd like to find out how long it might take, what to expect as a female traveller on my own (I gather that these countries fairly safe apart from attracting lots of curiosity!), what the transport/roads are like and any other general tips/advice/recommendations. Not sure if this post will get read but I'd be really grateful for any tips or pointers as to where to find good information! Thanks! victoria.johnson@hotmail.co.uk |
