When you travel for long periods of time, do you take reminders of home with you, like photographs or notes etc.?

In October I'll be leaving for my first BIG trip and I'm contemplating pasting some pictures and notes into my notebook to remind me of the people I'm leaving behind.

Is that lame? lol

Nope have not packed anything special. These days so much is online especially the pics.I do have my old diary which I will write in one of these days.

This time around I did NOT buy "special" travel stuff (except the backpack)...basically just packed like I would on a 3 week trip. If I need anything will buy, need pictures...will print. Need a familiar toothpaste will pick up colgate. Don;t worry too much about missing home. If you do just pick up the phone and call people...family and friends.

If you have a pet, people will want to see a photo of it.

If not, carrying along a photo of me will suffice.

On a more serious note, yes I brought some photos with me. Bring whatever you want! It's your trip and photos hardly weigh anything at all.

Sometimes people like to see photos of your home and family - it can be a good talking point. Your country is as exotic to someone you meet far from home as theirs is to you. When my brother lived in India, he used to watch Heartbeat (cheesy, 1960's view of rural England) with his Indian flatmate, who couldn't believe that England is so green.

I bring about 5 photos with me, not really for myself but to show to people I meet. It's a great way to initiate "conversation" when you don't have a common language. I have a picture of my family, dog, house and Halloween. Halloween was the favorite by far but people do like to see how my parents look.

I have a tiny photo album I carry with pictures of family and friends and my home. Like Bunglegirl said it's a great conversation piece. Plus when I get lonely during travel I look at them. Mostly I do this for business travel but I think it would work well on a long trip. I know when I went to Africa, everyone wanted to know about the place and people I came from.

We're taking a whole book! Pictures of "our kiwi life" - our house and vege garden, family, friends standing in front of their houses, scenic shots of different hikes we've been on, camping shots, our local shops, last years birthday cakes, a Christmas montage, our food, the kids playing and working round the section...(we chose pictures based on conversations we had had with people when we travelled for an extended time last time)...although it's a wee bit bigger than we would have wanted, we crammed heaps of photos into it and it doesn't weigh much (http://www.digitalmax.co.nz/CreateGifts/Detail.aspx?id=115)

As for my other favourite home comfort, I'm taking him with me!!!

I take a bunch of picture of home before I leave. My kids, my dogs, and I make sure to take lots of pictures of the snow to show anyone who might be interested.
