I would love to have a hand held cell, email and navigator if it would be worthwhile using rtw. I will be travelling Mom and daughter in march and want the comfort and safety of knowing how to get somewhere...any ideas out there?

If you mean some sort of mapping device, it really isn't an option. Most mapping devices will over cover certain areas. You can get one for the US/Canada, or part of Europe, but I don't know of one that covers the earth.

I do carry a GPS with me, but it is small and only gives lat/long data.

You could use google maps while on the road to locate where you want to go and then plug the lat/lon coordinates into a gps. Not exactly street mapping, but it would get you roughly in the vicinity of where you want to be. Mostly it would be handy for long train/bus rides in foreign countries when you have no clue where you are or how far way it is to where you are going.

WOW...THAT WAS A GREAT SUGGESTION. Are you using a bluetooth because of the model of your phone rather than a screen? Would you suggest a phone with wi-fi and gps...I am traveling with my 14 year old daughter and we both lack in direction abilities... thanks again Homeschoolcogsil@aol.com

Garmin sells maps that cover pretty much the whole planet. It can get really expensive fast, though, depending on how many countries you need covered.

I'm torn on taking mine. Much like the laptop, I guess, I can just ship it back if I'm not using it or if it impedes me in some way.

For those of you with laptops... Theres a cord to hook a garmin 76 up to the laptop. Ought to be able to take plotting software (Don't know what that'd be for land based) and get an idea of whats going on.

My GPS experience is geared towards water travel... where points of interest are plotted from a chart, onto the GPS for future reference. Unless its a charting or map GPS, the marks are for navigation... or where to stay the heck away! Don't see why you couldn't plot different places in town, and have a basic grid to show distances. Real basic triangulation would lay over a local map extremely easily.

I beg that those of you looking to use an electronic gizmo as a compass... still pack an analog one!

Good luck!
