Has anyone seen or heard of something that looks like chicken wire that totally surrounds your backpack? I saw a few people in SE Asia that had them. It might come in handy when I leave my pack at a cafe or tour agency (while looking for a guest house or trekking), just a thought. I'm gonna be in India and Nepal for more than a year and I know I'll be stashing my pack more than once. Anyone know where I can find one?

Peace.

I just had the look at the website and it seems to me that something like this screams "STEAL ME!!!"

I know that the BootsnAll guys recommend it for their valuables.

I think that there was an older post all about it a few weeks/months ago. Try searching for it... probably under member's forum. Joe Ehrlich (spelling is probably wrong - sorry Joe) may also have an opinion on it in his blog.

I love my Pacsafe and would nit imagine traveling without it. But I use becasue I travel with a laptop and photo equipment in Africa and Latin America. If you don't want it screaming steal me. Put it inside your bag and then just use the cord to attach it to a bolted down item.

Well, it it might say "Steal Me!", but it also makes it pretty difficult to do, since you can also use it to lock the pack to something solid. You can have the best of both worlds if you put a rain cover over it.

have a good trip!

i never left anything valuable in my pack and when i did i just made sure my pack didnt look inviting. I think most travellers are trustworthy and the people i have heard that did have problems was always from the locals (mainly people on buses). But i think if someone really wants something theyll just cut it out.

I do agree that the pac safe makes it scream 'steal me' - and i dont think ill ever get one. ill just insurance instead.

Im a trusting person...

I took a Pac safe with me RTW and used it twice (in nine months). The part of it (as someone else mentioned)that I did use was the cord part that you can wrap through your shoulder straps and any other loops on your bag and attach it to something that doesn't/or can't be moved. This was great as it would maybe have acted as a deterrent if someone was checking bags out but didn't really scream "steal me". Hell, if they wanted my bag bad enough and were willing to break through that wire then have it - I wasn't travelling with anything irreplaceable (as you shouldn't, but easier said than done I realise), or if I was it was on my body. You can buy just the cable and a combination lock for about the third the price of the pac safe itself (same website I think) and that's what I'll be taking on my next trip. Hell, if you really want a Pac safe I'll let you know when I put mine on ebay!!!

I have decided to get one for my up coming trip. There were three bits of logic that trumped the 'steal me' con point.

  • I'm more worried about the opportunistic thief than I am a well equipped thief with the time to break into my pack.
  • If there are several packs to choose from, i'd think a thief would go for the easier targets
  • They are nice for flying with because it keeps your pack with all it's little appendages nicely wrapped up.

We will see shortly how this pans out in practice.
