Has anyone taken the following RTW route or at least similar? Basically I am looking to read your blog if you have one to get an idea of price, hostels, places to visit etc.

Proposed Itinerary:

London - Cape Town (overland to J'Burg) - Sydney (The 'loop' round to Melbourne via Alice Springs) - Christ Church (overland to Auckland) - Fiji - Los Angeles (overland to New York) - London

hey there kidder,

i am researching a rtw trip, not got a definite itinerary yet, and finding it hard to get the planning under way. Looking to go around May with any luck. Think the thought of travelling alone is stalling me.

if you fancy a planning buddy, i could use one to get me on the way.

alienep is leaving the building, i promise

Hi

I can help you no problems but I am a novice myself. I already have my itinerary planned (see above) but I know that a lot of people would prefer to skip South Africa and instead 'do' Asia (more countries etc.) I would suggest going to Lonley Planet and look through peoples journals and decide if the country is the one for you.

I don't think I would be able to do it on my own so you have my respect.

I'm in the midst...(well nearly done with)the planning of my rtw trip.

It all takes time...and I've beeen tearing my hair out god knows how many times but its all coming together now....(only about 2 years in the planning!).

My Itin looks something like this now...

London-New York (overland to LA) - Rio - Peru - Fiji - Aukland (1 month loop) - Cairns (loop through Sydney, Melboune, Adelaide, Alice to Darwin) - Singapore (overland through Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam - Hong Kong - China

Sounds like a lot but really its nopt that many flights....My plan seems to change day by day although its now becoming a settled route (just really want to tie up the South America details).

You would not believe teh amount of times I have changed my mind on this!!! Its crazy! Plus the more planning you do the mor eyou end up screaming at yourself!

Dont forget to give yourself enough tiome to get Vaccines sorted!

It just all takes time, and there are so many possibilities, I would suggest looking at what you're interested in, look at any places or Cities, or arttractions you really want to se and work around them! Also remember taht teh cost of living in US, OZ etc is a lot greater than that in South America, and Asia.

If you wanna talk anything over, scream, shout or just exchange ideas just come knocking!

Actually, I'm going with my family, and I'm having a hard time too. I think it's the overwhelming amount of information we're starting to deal with, and my head spins everytime I even think about RTW tickets.

Our itinerary is starting to coalesce though. It looks something like this: St. Louis to Sydney--buy a used car and drive around for 2-3 months (next November), then Auckland, travel for 1 month, fly to Bangkok and travel overland thru Thailand and VietNam for a couple of months, then fly to Istanbul and travel thru Turkey and Greece and Egypt for a couple of months, overland thru Europe, camping, mainly wanting to see Spain and Italy, then to France, and flying home from Paris. We plan to camp and hostel a lot. Also to volunteer with WWOOF for some of that.

HSINC and London Card--What types of accommodation are you going to do on the overland part of your trip thru the US? What states are you planning to go thru on your way? Do you have a liberal or hard-core budget?

I'll be doing the hostel thing most likely as well...I may do a cheap hotel if i can every now and again...if only to allow myself a little space and a good nights sleep every now and again but teh majority will be hostels (about 95% I would think).

Oh and I'll be visiting St Louis on my trip.....joing cardinal nation for a couple of games!! he hee. I cant wait to get to the new Busch stadium!! Aside from my pilgrimage to STL i'll be off to NYC, Boston, DC, Chicago, STL, New Orleans, through Texas to Vegas and upto Vancouver and down through PDX to San Fran and LA. How does that sound?? lol.

It sounds like a fly zinging around the room and hitting the walls and ceiling every now and then. CrazyI'm glad you'll hit St. Louis though--I lived there for years.

The reason I'm wondering is; though I would hate to tell anyone to skip Missouri, since it's a beautiful state, please avoid interstate 70. It is getting infamous for major wrecks with the big trucks. We had a near miss there this summer ourselves. The section between St. Louis and K.C. is the worst. A couple of nicer alternatives would be I-60 or I-44. 60 takes you thru the Ozarks and is very beautiful, and I-44 has parts of the famous old route 66. This is a big country, and if you fancy a bit of camping, the state parks usually have the nicest facilities and you can see a lot of wildlife--and there are lots of them. It costs about $12-15 per night to camp (tent, Rv is more). Hotels average about $60-80 for a very basic room. I have never stayed in a hostel in the states and I don't think they're as common here as in the rest of the world, but don't quote me on that. I'm sure they're more common in the cities, but in the smaller towns- not much. Good luck on your travels--both of you.

Unless you really want to avoid other regions of the planet and cost is not a major issue, I’m afraid that with such an itinerary your rtw trip will be more expensive than the average trip.

Anyway, take a look at this list of selected travelogues, some of them include entries about the places you mentioned.

Enjoy your trip!

Hey that's a great site, fmgomes. I bookmarked it and I will be looking at it a lot more.

I really liked the rtw trip calculator, but have a question about that. How do you work the budget when you have a family of 4 going? I read somewhere that many hostels will give free beds to kids under 18, but apparently they don't advertise that. Food and transport would be straight X4 I think (unless the transport is taxis or car rentals), but lodging is the sticky question. Also, is the lodging in your budget estimate cheap hotels, hostels, camping or what? I guess what I'm asking is, would it be slightly cheaper per person for a family of 4, and if so, how much percentage would I knock off for each day?
