Holds PhD in Packing |
I'm traveling with my soon-to-be-Husband. We both have traveled a lot in the past, but any long term travel has been seperate. I studied abroad in Australia and backpacked Europe. He was in the military and did long tours of Korea and Iraq. During Korea he spent his leave traveling all over Japan and tha pacific. We have only spent 10 days together traveling at a time.
I know we'll get on each others nerves since our travel style is completely different. I have type A (which traveling actually can temporarily cure - but only to a point), and he's the guy who shows up late to everything. I could go on. Because we're both so independent, I think taking a break might be a healthy thing to do. But I'm not sure where this would happen. the bulk of our trip is Southeast asia. Have any of you done this before, or have any suggestions of how to coordinate this? We want to make sure that its not hard to meet back up - and we really only want to spend 4 days apart. |

Honestly, I think teh nest thing you can both do is play it by ear. SE Asia is actually quite a tough place to split up generally (as traditional hostels are often hard to find and its tough to go different directions for a short space of time and have a good central meeting point).
I would say if you do it anywhere the Thai Islands might be the place but I there are many pluses to doing taht as a couple as well. My suggestion would be to split up during the day and meet again for dinner a few times a week. It gives you teh chance to have space without having to figure out huge amounts of logistics. Just make sure you allow this to happen. If, afterall you feel like you need afew days apart then you'll work that out when you're there. Youboth need to be open and upfront about what you wan and need and not react badly if it deosnt meet with your own needs. So, basically be open and understanding, find compromise when its needed. |

Lost in Place |
Or you could split up in a central location, say Bangkok... one of you goes north to Chieng Mai and further, the other goes south to the islands... can definitely be done in four days.
You could split up in Penang, one of you stays there, the other heads off to Kuala Lumpur and you both meet there. You could split up in Bali, one of you to the beaches, the other to Ubud or Lombok... I think the combinations are absolutely endless, and I find it easy to travel in SE Asia so getting from one place to another is relatively simple... I do like the idea of spending time on my own when I travel - you'll have that much more to share when you meet up again. |
