Sometimes I use them to get a free ticket, sometimes to get an upgrade, so I don't know how to vote. Depends on length of flight, price of a coach ticket, etc.

And so I've voted. I know what you mean about becoming addicted to non-coach. Once you've been spoiled with sitting in a seat that's actually comfortable, it's difficult to go back to coach. That said, I fly coach more often than not and only use miles to upgrade if it's a really long flight, or a redeye that I want to be able to sleep through.

Yea, my upgrades are for intercontinental stuff only. Not going to blow the miles for an upgrade on a three hour flight. Hell, not even a five hour flight.

I spend mine on free tickets, but only on tickets that have an expensive cash price.
No point spending 60,000 miles on a $400 ticket from Toronto to London...
Much better to spend 15,000 on a $2100 ticket from Montreal to Iqaluit.
(Incidentally, a while ago I started a topic a while back that tried to find other good "value for points" flights. If anyone else has examples, I'd love to hear about them.)

Wait a second. The same travelers who want to save $4 or $5 taking a local bus instead of taking a taxi are willing to give up an extra trip by using additional miles (that could be used on said future trip) just to be more comfortable for 8-10 hours on a plane ride where they will probably be sleeping anyway most of the time?
Darn, I am confused ...

It is a bit of a contradiction. The thing is, I rack up more miles than I'm able to use for trip tickets because I'm currently unable to take as many trips as I'd like. The other thing is, I'm not in my twenties, and my back starts KILLING me after a while sitting in coach so I can't sleep. Given the choice between being comfortable and not, call me crazy, I'll choose comfort.

Hey, I use taxis! But you get better travel stories when you use local buses Plus, my husband accrues more miles than we could possibly use in a year (if we want to keep our jobs), so why not make what is invariably the worst part of a journey a little better?
